View Full Version : Rambling general thoughts

Just a few thoughts, none of them enough for a seious discussion by themselves, but the've been on my mind none the less.

1. Having to select a fire arm for possible looter activity (those Hurricanes), found myself reaching for the big, ugly, "evil black rifles" with the long detachable magazines, pistol grip stocks, and flash hiders. May not have been the best choice from a purely tactical point of view (although I felt it was)...but the Media has done such a good job on the psycology of them being evil killers, figured to put that bit of brain washing to good use. The average looter would proably not know what rifle it was, but that it "looked deadly".

2. After working some hours each night on a friends gun out of the goodness of my heart, have come to the firm conclusion that you just can't polish fecal matter....leave the cheap guns to those who don't know one brown substance from another ("cheap" as opposed to "inexpensive"...there is a difference).

3. "Drop in" is only 1/2 a lie...usually it will drop in, it just won't function.

4. IF you deal with shotguns ande big bore rifles (over 40cal.) then check out the big tool houses....a semi-flexible fiber optic viewer 18" long can be had for a decent price. Working from both ends, can get through even a 30" barrled bolt action (or a 36" barrled single shot). Fish-eye lense rather than a side view, but plenty good enough to spot barrel inperfections, wear, or erosion.

5. May as well order new cleaning gear if you get the above scope...you will end up re-cleaning what you thought was clean.

6. Just knocking around ideas with a friend in the space industry...and drinking was involved...and came up with a plan (on bar napkins) of the ultimate target. Using fast servos, could place sensors at 25 and 50 yards, plot the trajectory of the bullet, and have the servos move the target to intersect... figure it to be good to 1/8MOA...move the target to where the bullet is going...will sell it to gun-writers, so they can at last actually shoot a gun and get 1/4MOA groups.

1. Sounds like good logic to me
2. that's what i keep telling my wife
3. I got nothing
4/5. Hmm, that is pretty useful, of course that means i probably would end up spending more time cleaning than shooting
6. maybe you shouldn't drink so much :D

A little clearification:
#3. A dead roach will generally "drop in" a gun...that seems to be the only qualification needed to earn the "drop in" label.

#5. Believe (even sober) he just may build one. Figures if the bullet will stay in 4", can get fast enough servos to still process the trajectory and move the targer in place so long as MV isn't over 3000fps.

I haven't done any stock work, YET. someday i will find the right stock for my 788

It would be interesting to see something like that work, i could see it pulling a chrony and getting mortally wounded. keep us posted

One of the 'street sweeper' shotguns would be comforting in a chaotic post-hurricane environment... don't know if those can be had anymore, though.

That or a Thomson! :D

Mike is right - anything with a bore that looks like the end of a garden hose will surely gain the attention of possible looters. A 12 ga semi-auto or pump with a loooooong magazine tube, butt ugly black plastic stock with pistol grip and a bandoler full of cartridges slung over a shoulder should do it. :D

Didn't have anyone to point it at (thankfully) but believe the old HK91 would have done the trick just fine...don't have any "evil looking" shotguns, and decided on hard target (car/truck) pennetration as a proabable advantage.

But it did lead me to thinking that at times of civil unrest, having a gun that darn well looks like a mean one, just may be a good idea....under normal circumstances, the visual of a gun isn't imporatant, but when a lkarge group is headed your way (see the food riot situation in Haiti?), being able to at lest give some of them pause may be a good thing.

I think maybe you'd better get a message to Feinstein, Kennedy, Kerry, et al. They seem to be under the impression that only a criminal would want an ugly, black "Assault-Type" weapon. The idea of using one for Self-Defense  is apparently a concept they've never heard of.

I wonder what type of weapons the caretakers of the Kerry estates have? Were I a bettting man, I'd be betting on the stuff very few of us can afford. Might be an interesting "Investigative Report" lurking there........

After the first hurricane that hit us here in Orlando, FL. [Charlie] I went out to the gun safe, uploaded a .45 and 12 ga. pump riot gun. Took a ride to my business, around midnight, after the hurricane pasted over to check my shop. I was armed and ready to handle any unwanted, no paying customers.

Well I left those guns out for the following two hurricanes. Didn't have any problems that I needed my arms for. Which I am thankful.

Always ready !!!
