I've been shooting 22's quite bit lately and have just been setting tin cans on the ground, but now I'm thinking about using paper targets. I've been trying to think of a design for a portable target stand that I could put together from some scrap lumber and plywood I have lying around. The problem that I keep coming to is that I usually shoot into a draw or other uneven terrain so that there is dirt to stop the bullet, but how can I get a stand to sit up right in these conditions?
Anyone have some ideas? Any drawings would also be helpful.
Thanks,
Sven

One that works, is two pieces of angle iron about 4' long, connected with the "v" outward and just wide enough to slip a piece of plywood in (whatever width you choose) from the top. You can use another piece of angle about 2' from the top to act as a bottom rest for your plywood insert. Put a cross piece near the bottom (to push on with your foot), and staple your targets to the plywood with a staple gun.

Can also use old cardboard box material in place of plywood. A lot of businesses let you have the boxes when making purchases to carry items home. A lot of targets can be stapled to them before replacement is required, and they are a lot cheaper than plywood. Some gunshops carry B-27 targets printed on pasteboard. one of them last a long time. Might also check with your local law enforcement. they normally only use targets once and then dispose of them.

I go to the hardware store...
Pick up 4 PVC Elboes, two tee's, and mebbe 10 or so feet of pvc pipe...I wouldn't worry about getting the really thick stuff...and the diameter would be about 1.25".
lay out the elboes at 4 corners, with the two tee's in the middle of the two long tangents. face the open center of the tee's up, and use some regular tomatoe stakes. use whatever paper your using as a guide as to how wide in the middle you need it. You won't need to cement the fittings....just take it apart and throw it in a box when your done. :)

OK, This is really cheap but it works very well.
Find a cardboard box large enough to tape the target to the front of the box. Throw your ammo, targets, tape, sandbags, etc... in the box and head for the range.
Once at the range, empty the box and tape your target to the front. Walk the box down range and set it on the ground. It is usally necessary to add some weight to the box to keep it from blowing around. I have found a dirt clod to work best for this as it is not a hard surface to cause ricochets.
Enjoy your shooting session and when you are done, there is usally enough left of the box that if you dump out the dirt clod (and its pieces) that you can use it to carry all the other goodies home again.

target stand:
One I find useful is a realtor sign, Don't condone taking one from a yard but you can find one not being used. The steel spikes make it easy to insert into the earth by foot on bottom bar.

one 2"x4" about 4' long
cut one end into a triangle shape.
take sledge hammer with you to range, and pound the stake into the ground, than staple the target onto the stake.

wait about a month and there will be a glut of worthless election signs (i prefer shooting kerry signs) that you could tape or staple targets to
I like cookiemonster's idea. This is what it looks like, with a cross-bar added to the top.

problem with this set up though is you have to make sure you hit the target, otherwise you'll have to make a stand everytime you go out :D
I made one similar to the one pictured. Only thing I used a vinyl window frame, and filled in the hole in the middle with vinyl soffit. then made legs for it with 2x4's. It's sturdy, it's light, and its durable. We shot it with .500 S&W, .50 Beowulf and a .300 Winchester all evening, and the soffit is still holding up.
Ofcourse this was easy built for me, because I have all the stuff laying around due to my work.

Funny, I find the Bush signs to be much better targets.
