I've been considering one of these (take down .22Mag). Anyone have any oppinons on these? Fit/Finish, Accuracy?
I've thought this would make a perfect companion for my single Six.
Thanks

They are great guns, shoot well and ruggedly built... however, don't expect to find any fine fit and finish! They are undoubtedly one of the crudest finished American made firearms I've ever seen! Most of the surplus guns coming out of the old communist block countries are finished MUCH better.

All that Marshall said is true.
We have three of them. A commemerative which we shoot. A standard in .22LR and a new .17HRM.
My wife has introduced many young shootersa to their first day at the range with the two long-rifles.
We really enjoy them. In September 1975 I flew a little racing plane straight into the ground. I was blinded for many months. When my sight started to return my father went down to H. Cooks in Alburquerque and bought the standard rifle for me. While wearing a back brace I would set out in our storeroom and shoot into a bullet trap to pass the time.
That little rifle gave me a good reason to get out of bed every morning.
I never had kids but to those of you who do, a good Dad is a mighty fine thing!

HAve been reading this...and have looked over a couple of the modern made versions. Don't have the best looking fit or finish, but they seem strong, simple, and servicable. Have been debating something to put under a loose Unertl 6X, and though of mounting it on a litte single shot Stevens....may still do it but am hoping for a 17M2 version.

Thanks for all the responses...
By poor fit and finish (have to ask because I've been searching and it seems no one keeps one one the rack!), are we talking H&R fit and finish, Brazian single shot shotgun fit and finish... (not to impune either of these companies, just looking for a comparison to a common gun).
I meen are the flats of the barrel not flat, is the wood all knoted and crapy, or are we just talking that the gap that runs between the forearm and barrel is not consistant.
Any Pics?
Think this still might be a great in the 4 wheeler, take down grouse gun. Sounds like it's worth the money
Thanks again

Savage does not put labor into finsh and fit on these rifles. they are functional. I think a litle better quality than the average Rosi/Taurus product. I have two Model 62 pumps (one Rossi, the other Taurus) so I like them just fine too.
The sights are crude but functional. the .17HRM came with a weaver scope base. I have an old 3/4" Weaver 22 scope that I have considerd putting on it. Gil Sengal did this to one in the Rifle magazine article a few Months back.
For the money these rifles are functional and accurate. The nice thing about open sights is they are easier to hold over with. The rimfire trajectory requiring this. We are trying out the .17HRM for this reason. It does shoot flatter.

Looks like if I want a take down with more umph than a .22LR I'll have to get my first .17 HMR.
Don't know why they don't offer the .22 Mag in Takedown.
How hard do ya'll think it would be to have the standard .22 Mag turned into a takedown (looks like it would take one taped hole)
Thanks for all the first hand knowledge

Within the last year Rifleshooter magazine printed ab article on converting the Favorite to takr down. Another magazine had an article on installing a tang sight on the Favorites. I like tang sights but they are not helpful at unknown ranges because of the need to hold over.

The Favorite has become my "Favorite" squirrel rifle. It has yet to miss in the field. It may not be the best finished rifle in the world, but by gosh it will get the job done. If you miss, don't bother blaming the rifle.

Hey Fella's,
I bought a Savage/Stevens for my son about a year ago(22LR). Finish is as noted, but it is just a neat little rifle that takes you back a spell. I should add that these little single shots are made in Canada, much like Winchester did with their single shot shotguns back in the 70's. I have one of those too. I don't have anything against Canadians at all so no offense intended, but would just like for traditional American gun companies to keep their manufacturing here. For the amount of money they have saved by having them made over the border, they also lost alot of interest in American shooters that have bought Henry's instead, in my opinion.

Big Bore....nice rifle! I REALLY like that cartridge setup in the stock. Another little groan about these guns.....and I do love them despite it, is that they went to half round/half octagon in their barrels. That reduces that weight at the muzzle a bit and just feels a bit strange to me. But, it is a joy to carry and it still shoulders and shoots well.
