View Full Version : 44 cowboy loads in 629 handgun
I'm having a hard time finding 44 special ammo for my S&W 629. Can find 44 cowboy loads, but I'm not that knowledgable on the different types of ammo the 629 can handle (except my magnum hunting loads). Can I use the cowboy loads in my 629 handgun?

As long as the ammo you shoot is in .44 mag or .44 special cases you can shoot it in your 629.
The thing to be careful of is that you don't end up with 44-40 cowboy loads. Those won't work in your pistol (or any other chambered for .44 mag). While they shoot the same diameter bullet, the cases that hold the bullet are different.
Take care,

Winchester makes a 44 Special 200 gr. jacketed load. Probably not real popular in the stores, but can be bought online.

Yes, you can use Cowboy loads in your S&W Model 629 as long as they are either .44 Magnum or .44 Special cases. They should be very pleasant to shoot since Cowboy loads are rarely loaded over 900 fps. You really should consider handloading your .44 Magnum. Don't know how anyone can afford to shoot one without "rolling your own".
