You did a fine job.

One of these days I'll dig out my Mauser 98 that my Father picked up on the steps of the Cathedal in Cologn. The German that was carrying it didn't have any further use of it. Dad also picked up a Hitler Youth 22 RF Mauser single shot near by, seems the young fellow who was using it made the mistake of shooting an American sargent in the leg with it. The American sargent responded with a grenade, that young fellow had no further use of the rifle.
My Grandfather used the 8mm mauser for hunting deer and Elk in Colorado and I used the 22 to learn to shoot.
Currently I'm shooting large bore Winchester lever actions, 45-70 and 405, and an Armalite AR 10t, 7.62.
I've got a shooting buddy that absolutely loves his Moisen, a Swedish ??? rework. he can hit what ever he aims at, out to 300 meters.
I've been curious about the French MAS. How accurate is it? Could it be converted to some more easily obtained cartridge. say 30-06, 308?

I love the mas 36, of course this is not a k31(and other swiss rifle) wich are for me the best military rifles ever made, mine is acurate as you can see upper, this rifle is very strong, and its base is still used in the french army ( (FRF1, FRF2, FRG1 and FRG2), of course i also love because its a french rifle, the brother of my grandfather who was in the french foreign legion used it in indochina, and told me it was a great weapon uppon field, as good as the US1917 according to him, but the main weapon used by the french army in indochina was the US1917 as this war was financed by the USA, i dont think you will find any in 30.06 with an original barel, here as the legislation dont let us use the original cadrige we use 6.5x284 that we expand to 7.5, this cadrige is almost the same as the 7.5MAS i think you can find 6.5x284 in the USA....

You are very lucky to own a Hitler Youth 22 RF Mauser i'm looking for one and cant find one, those are great rifle very rare and full of history....

what europeen military rifles do you have in the US??

Hi, VTDW:
There's a detail in the latest version that may have bitten you. OK, let's start from the beginning. Start Irfanview, click on File on the top line menu, then Open. Find your picture and open it, standard Windows procedure. Check the preview active box in the Open window as it makes sorting out pictures quicker. Now that your picture is on-screen, click Image on the top line menu, then Resize/Resample. There's lots of options for a new size, but let's try Half for now, and click OK at the bottom of the menu box. The picture should be resized now. If you don't like the size, click Edit, then Undo, and try a different size. When you've got it the size you want, click File, then Save as. Rename the picture. It can be as simple as tacking an s for small on the end of the first part of the name. Now here's the part that may have stumped you. Beartooth won't accept a file larger than 100000 bytes. Look at the box that opens with the title JPEG/GIF save options. For some reason, if the Save quality slider is at 100%, the half sized picture file isn't much if any smaller than the original. Moving the slider to 90% drastically reduces
the file size. (Something to do with a new JPEG standard????). Save it and check the new file size.

If you're still having trouble, give me a detailed explanation of what the problem is.

Bye
Jack

what europeen military rifles do you have in the US??

I would bet that it would easier to answer "What European rifles are not available in the US."
The buddy I mentioned shooting the Moisen has the British 303, Swedish 6.5, Swiss 7.5?, Austro-Hungarian 8-56R, German 7.92, Russian 7.62-54R.
Some of the fellows I know at my shooting club, shoot some of the rarer German sporting cartridges, which I know nothing about.
I have two German Mausers, the one I mentioned and a sporterized 98. I've not shot them much, as I keep finding new rifles for my cast bullet habit. One of these days I'll get a bullet mold for the 8 mm and some brass and start load testing.

Thanks Jim. I took the picture that way, since I had the grip frame off of the gun at the time, and of course you can't see both stocks at the same time when they are on the gun. Mesquite is pretty, but it sure is hard. Also free if you live in Texas and deer hunt anywhere south of I-10, and a few places north as well.

Darn near anything you can imagine, and then some. I've got a reworked 1917 Enfield (.22-250) that my dad built long ago, a 1896 Swede mauser infantry rifle in good condition (shoots great), a Yugo 48a (basic 1898 mauser variant, slight changes) and a 1893 Turk that I reworked a bit (shoots surprisingly well, picture below).

My dad has a Brno mauser that my grandad dragged back from the Pacific, where it was captured from the Japanese after they captured it from the Chinese and who knows how it got there.

Tons of soviet-bloc guns available, both bolt guns (mosin-nagant variants) and the usual SKS and AK clones.

Oh and I have a Romanian .22 trainer, which as far as I can tell is a take-off of some Mauser .22 bolt gun.

By the way - most of the surplus stuff here is pretty cheap, except the German 98s which are getting pricey. But you can buy Bosnian 1898's for a little over a hundred bucks, still, and the Turks are cheaper yet.

The only one of my guns that I listed that I paid over $100 was the Yugo, and it was less than $200, so we're not talking a lot of cash for these guns, still plenty of them. The turks could be had as low as $50, at one point.

Enfields abound... but I have not shot one. That's all I can think of. Oh and I see a few MAS rifles floating around, as well.

why not???????????

Because i'm not ready to advertise the numbers and types of guns that i may own. In cases that i'm personally familiar with, that's a great way to get burglarized.

It means having someone break into your house and steal things. I know some will consider that paranoid, but i see it as protecting my assets. Even when (rare occasion) i sell a gun, i don't carry out the transaction at my house.

Nice pics,

My military collection starts with a 1871 Swiss Vetterli in 10.4 RF. Then moves to the early Mausers 93,95 and 98s. My Babies? Where to start?
1884 Mk IV Martini Henry, not one of the recent Nepalese imports.
Gewhr 88, Turk rework
1895 Mauser, converted to 7.62x51 CETME
1896 Mauser Swede, with another three 1896/38s or 38s.
Several 1898 Mausers, Turks, Yugos, etc.
Fusil M1936
M49/56
Lee Enfield No1MKI
Two Lee Enfields No4 MK1
Mosin Nagants, everything from Russian M91s to M44s, with several Finns (M38, M91/39, and M39)
M1917 Enfield

I love them all, chosing a favorite is like singling out a child. I DO kinda lean towards the Swedes, though.

I think my favorite milsurplus rifle would be my Inland M-1 Carbine, though my Egyptian Hakim in 8mm would be a close second.

My favorite surplus pistol would be my Webly MkIII with the birdshead grip. Now thats a handgun.

I also really like a buddy of mines 1883 Remington rolling block in .43 Spanish Refomado! The dang thing has a .451 bore and shoots the 300 gr XTP like it was made for it! Can't get him to part with it since he killed a 6 point with it.

Yeah the 49/56 is a pretty well designed rifle, aside from a quirk or two. That floating firing pin is an accident waiting to happen. If you don't chamber a round, VERY carefulley, even with milspec primers, you can get a slamfire as the bolt closes. Other than that, the buttstock is too short for me (I am 6 foot 3 inches).Plenty accurate, good sights.
An awful lot of 49/56s were converted to 7.62x51 here. I prefer the original 7.5x54.

though my Egyptian Hakim in 8mm would be a close second.

I forgot about my Hakim, and my AG42. Oops. The muzzle break on the Hakim will blast your ears off if you shoot it without hearing protection!

Charley,

Boy, you'er right about that ear spliter on the Hakim. I once drove two people wearing muffs out of an indoor range with mine! Pull the trigger and your sinus pressure changes!
