Exotic animal is defined as animal not native to North America. Examples include fallow deer from Mediterranean, barbary sheep from Lybia and Morrocco, blackbuck antelope from India and Pakistan.

Modern zoos provide a place where endangered animals can be saved from extinction and viewed by a paying public. A fine place indeed. But within just one generation, these animals lose their natural wildness and unique habits forever.

In contrast, same animals at private hunting ranches are born in the wild and remain so. Many animals are nearly extinct in their native land(s) yet can be hunted legally in USA and S. Africa at private game ranches. Examples include addax from Sudan, symitar horned oryx from Ethopia, eld deer from Burma, and many others.

Hunting exotics on a large well managed ranch is fun and challenging. Hunting on a small place is less than ideal and has led to accusations of ethics and un-sporting. Key is to do a little research and ask questions before booking a hunt.

In summary, hunters spending their cash has led to the developement of exotic game ranches and the saving of many species from extinction. While not for everyone, this type of hunting is growing each year as hunters discover the fun for themselves.

Exotic game ranches have done well here in North Texas.
There's nothing prettier than a big Axis or Black Buck on the wall.
There is a small ranch across the hwy from our lease that holds about 300 acres. In my humble opinion, that is not enough acerage to hold these deer.
The results are that the browse line is about 6 feet up in the trees and the whitetails can't compete with that.
The good news this year is that with all of the rain, there is enough forage for all of them.
Some of the high fenced ranches want to put as many animals as possible on their places but in a bad year with no rain, it is always the whiletail that suffers.

I have hunted deer for 50 years now, I was 7 when I started, but I have yet to kill a 160 class buck.

Maybe when I finally do, I'll quit.

The state of New Mexico has oryx and barbary sheep in the wild on state/federal lands. Both res and non-res hunters may enter a draw for limited permits each year. This is a once-in-a-lifetime type hunt. You only get one permit, if drawn.

"Exotic" sounds like it would always be something glamorous, but we have plenty of feral hogs which fall into the same category here in Texas.

I like the "erotic" hunt and I think foxes fall into that category ;)

Yep, and the great thing about hogs is that you can hunt them year around just like exotics.

No but it could be a felony. Did you have a depredation permit?
