and I'd like to install a shoulder strap and a laser sight and I was just wondering how easy that would be to do? and where I would find such things?

was just reading and it says "built in scope rail on side of receiver for optic mounts" is that where i would mount the laser sight?

I'm not at all familiar with Atlantic Firearms, but on most of the Romanian type AK's with the "scope rails", these are merely bases for detachable scope mounts. They have a cam type release so the scope can be taken off, so you could use the iron sights. To use these bases, you would have to get the corresponding mounts to attach to them. It's not likely a laser would fit in these, even if you could find them.

While a laser might look "cool" on an AK, I'm not sure how much practical value it would have. Most lasers won't be visible in daylight, unless it's the 635nm (short wave length) type. These also are sometimes refered to as the 1000 yard type, but this would mean for night-time use. Even these lasers still probably wouldn't be very visible in a lot of brightly lit outdoor settings, unless you used them in a shaded area.

If you really had to try a laser on your AK, probably the best set-up would be to get a clamp type bracket to fit the size of your barrel, and simply clamp it in place. The problem with this set-up would be if you did much rapid fire shooting, the heat from the barrel would transfer through the bracket, and cook the laser in short order.

You might be better served by saving the money for the laser, and simply buying more high capacity mags or a case of ammo, and use it the way it was intended. IMHO.

If you want a quick targeting system, Skip the laser and get an Eotec sight. A mil-dot is far better than a laser. And if you really want a laser. Buy a laser pointer at office depot for twenty bucks and duct tape ti to the barrel. At least you won't blow that much cash when the heat from the barrel burns out the laser.

i checked out the website and it looks like a really sweet system but its way out my price range and seems like its only for military and police, anyone know of any other good laser dot sights that are reasonably priced that would work on my ak?

I know AK's are fun to shoot. I have 2 of the Bulgarian Arsenal SA-93's and one SLR-95. Mine are pretty much standard configuration, but now that the AWB is over (temporarily), I've been thinking about getting enough US made compliance parts on them to get rid of the funky looking thumb-hole stocks, but that's about all I might do to them.

I remember seeing somewhere a replacement front hand guard that had accessory rails, so you could put lights or other stuff on the handguard - like on some of the tactical AR's. I don't remember who made it, but you could look on http://www.ak47.net/forums . They have threads dealing with scopes, optics, etc. Maybe you could find something there.

I don't think you will be happy with a laser pointing system...if you jury rig something then the recoil will probably trash it quickly..if that doesn't do it the heat will....but to improve quick aiming....try a simple solution...

put a fire site front post on it...they screw in....and Brownells has then in the catalog....

If you want a head's up sight..then the EO Tech is the way to go..but mounting one on an AK is an expensive operation at the moment...now...there is an outfit in Fl named mounting solutions that will be coming out with a slick recoil mount. BTW..this is avail for the AR now...
