I picked up the 4" model last week, and had to go try it out at my club. It felt good in my hands, not to muzzle heavy like the 8 3/8 model that I also have. It looks mean with the muzzle break, and the price was fair. Anyway I got to the range and no one was at the pistol range...cool. The range has a cement slab a roof and benches to shoot from. Behind me, around 35 yards away were some cars parked, they were shooting at the rifle range. From my bench, I fired one round at 25 yards, it felt much like it's big brother nearly no muzzle flip, surprisingly accurate, only one little difference, the blast was ungodly! I set off a car alarm behind my shooting spot! I waited a few minutes and the car reset itself so I fired another round. That darn car started again weee...wooo...weee...wooo. It didn't take long for the owner to get in his car and leave. Some people are so sore sometimes. Next time I'm grabbing more ammo!
Here is my family of 500 mags

Good lookin family ya got there! They are LOUD!!! Especially the 4 inch model. I too was kind of blown back by the muzzle blast, its most impressive...its a trade off really, less muzzle flip and felt recoil for more noise.

There are two brakes, one that comes with the gun installed has slots, and the other has a look of drilled holes. The owners manual isn't much help so I called service and asked them what the differance is. S&W said the one that came screwed in is for jacketed bullets (slots) and the other is for lead bullets.

Recently, someone wrote that they heard about someone else experiencing bleeding ears after shooting the 4" gun without ear protection. I find it hard to believe that S&W would produce a handgun that causes this to happen given the liability . Does anyone here know first hand, or has anyone actually witnessed what happens to the ears unprotected while shooting this gun?
I dont see how they could be held responsible, with all the warnings about ear protection. Also, the group that would be buying a .500 is most likely long time gun nuts anyway, so they should know better.

Do I understand correctly that the 4 inch model delivers less felt recoil? I always was under the impression that the more weight of the gun the better off you were?

It feels the same to me however they are reporting that the 4 inch model has less bullet velocity than it's big brother with a longer tube. So you have extra blast and more flame with a slower bullet, thus less felt recoil.

The most logical use for this gun is as a mountain gun for dangerous animal defense. In that situation no ear protection will be in use. So, why would S&W accept the liability of producing a gun that breaks ear drums as the cost of protection? Maybe this gun will not cause bleeding ears, as someone here claimed. Does anyone here really know? Is anyone who has this gun willing to find out?

I would say there is absolutey no liability at all for S&W . It's a person's own responseability to have ear protection . Ford motor co. is not responseable if you run someone over , operator error . I do not think there will be to many takers to try out their hand cannon to see if their ears will bust and bleed  I for one use ear protection at the range and out hunting . Got to love those big bores .

I have not fired a 4 inch as yet and have not seen one in person. Your picture gives the impression the barrel is of a different finish than the frame. Is this so or just an illusion? Nice family by the way. When will you adopt the performance center version?!?

This past weekend I really didn't want to travel to the range so I got permission to shoot in the backyard. Later I was told that every round blipped the Television satellite. I hope she will let me shoot out back again.
That family of yours shure has one loud kid.

2 weeks ago I had the PC version in my hands. Feels good not real heavy, but I don't care for it really. The price is 1050.00 which has something with it I'm sure. I like unscoped revolvers and this one really is ment to be a scoped gun. Only downside to the PC gun is that the front blades are not interchangable like the standerd 8 3/8 model. Point of impact changes alot if you shoot different weight bullets, so I have 2 different blades for my big revolver. The barrel on the baby is the same as the big one, except the baby has removeable muzzle brakes which gives it a different look. The one installed is for jacked bullets. The other with 4 extra round holes towards the front is for lead bullets. A tool is supplied for that one to remove it.(rod slides into "holes" and then you have leverage to unscrew it)

Jeez, guys, let's step back and think a minute. 500 Mag? Revolver? A gun that sets of car alarms and causes ears to bleed? For God's sake, gentlemen, put that sucker in a rifle where it belongs. I'll go ahead and say it: that's too much gun for me. First shot: within about a foot of target. Follow up shot: a moon launch, somewhere up in the stratosphere. Third shot: shooter in fetal postion, whimpering incoherently. When I saw this gun pictured actual size in a gun mag, I could barely believe it, It made my 686 look like a toy. To all you big bore advocates out there, God bless you. --MB
