Where could I look for better looking and better performing sights for my Rossi? I've seen tang sights and I'm not too sure becasue they kind of stick out against the slick lines of the gun. Those peep sights even more so... Do they really significantly improve accuracy? What is the deal with the semi-buckhorn sights and the like. Can someone tell me more about those and where you could get them?
Thanks,
Patrick

patrick,
If you want better sights on a levergun, then you will have to settle for a little visual clutter.
As you mentioned the tang sight sticks out in the lines of the gun. So does the side mount reciever sights, and XO top mount types. But they do provide for a much superior sight picture, along with increased sight radius. Therefor they are a much superior form of iron sights.
The factory type sights, semi-buckhorns, buckhorns, and other designs can be had at Brownells. They stock just about every kind of sight you can imagine.
On my lever guns I have either a Williams FP or a Lyman 66 series of side mount sight, with a post type front sight.
For me this combination provides the best sight picture, therefore the best potential accuracy.
The only sights to use if you are wanting the gun to be historically correct is the factory open type, or the tang sight.
If you want to improve your shooting by better sights, then you have to accept the changes to the lines of the rifle.

For something like the semi-buckhorn offered by Brownell, is that easy to install or would I need a gunsmith to do it? What would be a reasonable price to install?

The Semi Buckhorn sights as sold by Brownells and others attach to the barrel via a dovetailed slot in the barrel.
To remove the sight, get a suitable tool and something to protect the barrel, sight, and forarm with, (I use a 1/4" thick piece of leather) and tap it out. They come out LEFT to RIGHT. When installing the new one, they go in, RIGHT to LEFT.
How much a gunsmith charges I really have no idea. I do my own sights.

Is a suitable tool a small ball-peen hammer? What do you do, cover the sight with the leather to prevent scratching and tap?
Also, is there a good sight that is somewhere between $17 (semi-buckhorn) and $100 (Marbles tang sight) that would be more or less traditional that I could use?
Thanks,
Patrick

I use a big enough piece of leather to cover the sight, barrel and forarm.
I use a small Brass hammer. Steel will reall dings things up if you miss the leather. Brass can, but usually doesn't.
Go to http://www.brownells.com/ and check out the sights. I don't know the prices off hand.

I would reccomend the XS ghost ring and blade front post for you levergun if they make one for it. I'd have to check, but these are really rugged, accurate sights for any levergun.

I am now waiting for the delivery of B-SQ scope mount (http://www.e-gunparts.com/products.asp?chrMasterModel=1900z92%20PUMA&MC=) to be used with one of the red dot sights.
Cheers
Will report the results once ready.
