I want to purchase a Ruger MKII Target .22. There are certainly many options available when it comes to the barrel. I have other .22 pistols that I play around with, and get some good groups from, but I want one to truely use for target shooting.
Anyone have any advice on barrel length, type (bull, slab, etc.)? Any other tips on what I might want to be sure to include on the pistol would be appreciated.
I've heard that these are a @$#@! to clean, but I've also heard that the hassle is worth it.
By the way, I'm left-handed, so any lefties with experience with this pistol, please comment. I'm wondering if I will need to get different grips.
Thanks - Randy

Hello
I think you have find a nice gun, I have one Ruger Bull barrel stainless.... And I´m to is left handed.
To clean Ruger MKII is´t no problem, ones you have learn to dissebel it you can see that was no problem. You have to look at the
One thing you should buy to it for easy cleaning, is a small metall pice you put on the barrel and down throw the hole (magazine-hole). That helps you from geting dirt to the firemechnics.
I have make some pistol grips for it ,and it makes shooting easy. That for target shooting. If you should hunt with is I recomend not to put on new grips, .....
To this gun you have many company how sell custom parts. Look at this site: http://www.brownells.com/Default.aspx

the 678CG Competition Target (slabside) is the prefered target model, but any ruger with target sights whether it be MKII or .22/45 is capable of very competitive accuracy. the addition of a Volquartsen sear usually drops the trigger pull to 2# to 2 /4#, and adjusting the over-travel and maybe installing a pre-travel screw is about all needed to wring the most from them.

Thanks for the replies!
Let me ask anyone out there -- is the normal grip set up for right-handed persons? If so, do you know if there is a left hand grip available?

I too have decided on the 6 7/8" MKII, but not sure about barrel. I believe the slabed barrel is called the Government Competition, the bull barrel is called the Government, and the tapered is called the standard or target. What's the difference? Why is one barrel more accurate than the others?

Randy: the controls of the MKII are set up for the right handers, but http://www.volquartsen.com has left hand target grips for sale.the bolt stop, is on the left side, but can be operated with the fingers of the left hand. the mag release on the MKII is on the heel of the grip, but if you get a new MKIII it will be on the left side of the grip behind the trigger. easy enough to adapt to. the safety, also on the left side, will have to worked with with your thumb. a little cumbersome but doable. so, it isn't too bad to for a lefty to use the MKII.
twinGT: i think the only difference is the added weight is kinda like a stablizer to make it easier to shoot well. it absorbs some of the wobbles. both light and heavy MKII barrels are capable of the same accuracy, but the heavy ones shoot better in human hands. there is a happy medium, a lot of people like the .22/45 with 5.5" bull barrel, but the 678GC and the 678 Govt. are made for the target range. it boils down to what feels best in your hands.
here's a link to the best MKII site i've found. http://www.markii.org lotsa help with the first disassembly and choosing accessories, plus a bunch of nice guys in the forum.

Randy, I'm not sure left or right handed makes much difference. I am normally, right-handed, but have to shoot with the left eye, since the right eye was lasered because of macular degeneration. I don't find the right-handed grip any handicap at all. Unless you are shooting one handed as a lefty, I don't think you will have a problem.
Mine is the Government Slabside and very accurate to 30 yds.
The MKII is a bear to clean the first time, IF YOU DON'T follow the instructions in the manual. If you follow the directions and turn it upside down and let the pins drop as the manual states...it is easy. Also, if you take it apart to clean it, make sure you do it on a table and put something like a drop cloth under your chair. I dropped the pin from the bolt....easy to lose it on a deck between the boards. :o
