Hi all. I am new to this forum (well about 3 days ago). I also just moved to Ithaca NY. Every day, and I am not exagerating, I see at least two new dead deer on the side of the road, casualties of an accident with a car/truck. And I don't drive around here that much, so we're talking about 30 to 45 minutes of daily drive time locally.... The deer population here is out of control. I nearly hit one the other day and I was driving a convertble, which means I could have ended up wearing the deer. But really, they are a big hazard and it makes driving truly dangerous when the local joke is: You can tell how long you've lived here by how many deer you've killed with your car... (haha).... and within a year you'll hit at least one....

I went bow hunting and the first day saw 1 buck with 11 doe, darn greedy buck, (eats with both hands)... I think they should extend the hunting season around Ithaca for Doe.

Does anyone know where I can start a petition or campaign to address this deer trouble. And yes I am all for extending Bow season and muzzlelaoding at the very very least in this part of New York state.

You can talk straight to the NY DEC on their website. I think it's NYDEC.org.
Do your part to cut the deer population-shoot a doe (if legal). IMO, a good part of the reason for the overpopulation in some areas is that everyone holds out for a buck. The does taste just as good :)

Jack-- Thanks. I will check out the DEC website for comments/ recommendations.

I saw another dead deer on the way to work this AM and 3 new dead ones yesterday... I went to Dick Sporting goods to get another doe permit yesterday but they didn't have any new issues for doe for this county.... geeee, i guess there are NOT that many doe after all(!) and it is not a problem(!)... I feel so much better(!) I must be seeing mirages every day: all those dead deer on the road are just my imagination... ...and those 11 doe with that one buck, yupper, just my imagination again going a bit loopy on me..... ;)

Hi Yogi,

First i would like to say welcome to New York. Its a wonderfull state with some messed up politics but all in all a nice place to raise a family.

The reason your seeing more deer on the side of the road is the rut is kicking in and the bucks are chasing does these bucks are in a craze right now and this is the best time to be in the woods i have seen more deer than i can count on the roads here

happy hunting and good luck

Good point, Rifleman.
It is also the time of year when rush hour coincides with dawn and dusk- meaning lotsa cars on the road just when the deer are doing a lot of moving......

Yes I hear you both about the reasons why there might be collisions between deer and vehicle.... AND the issue is: there is an ABUNDANCE of deer and that spells HAZARD for the human population here in the Southern Teir. I have lived in the Northeast (NY-MA) for 47 years. Never, ever, ever have I seen so many dead deer on the side of the road as I have NOW that I moved to Ithaca. It is borderline absurd. I think they should extend the bow season or open a "special one" I did write the DEC and suggest it and said it could also help to stimulate teh local economy of it is properly marketed. Come Bow In Ithaca.... I did hear back from the DEC by the way, a nice personalized letter from a gent there. He agreed the Ithaca / Lansing area was over invested but said with the development, suburban spread and private land ownership issues it was very hard to control the deer population but agreed it IS a BIG problem...

Hope I can get out and do some more bow hunting over the next few days and get me one. This is my attitude: The one I don't get is the one I'll hit (with my car). So, I better make the time to get out and hunt!

Thanks for the welcome to NY. I do like it here. The waterfalls and woods and trails I have been on so far I've really enjoyed.
Regards,
Yogi
