View Full Version : Yellow Jackets vs Velocitors
For small game hunting, has anybody tested Remington Yellow Jackets vs CCI Velocitors? Which expand better?
Thanks,
Geoff

Can anything beat the CCI Stinger for small game hunting
with a 22LR?

What kind of small game? Personally, I like Mini-mags for squirrels. They are much more consistent than the Stingers and velocitors in my 10/22. When you hit a squirrel between the eyes, it doesn't really matter what kind of expansion you get.

Oh man I would take the yellow jackets any day. They're just better and cheaper. Sure, must stuff from CCI is going to destroy what you aim at all the time but keep in mind that you pay $4 for a box of Velocitors and $2.50 for a box of Yellow Jackets. I have shot both in my Marlin 980 and accuracy in both is superb. Once the yellow jacket's hollowpoint truncated-cone bullets hit something, you know it. Lots of squirrels and rabbits and the like are missing their entire heads because of it.

Either one is good, the difference is that the velocitors are made for larger game. The Gold Dot bullet penetrates better. CCI was making a 50 grain Gold Dot 22 mag round but it was discontinued due to accuracy problems with the heavy bullet. I read a test where 22 mag rounds were shot into gelatin and the 50 grain gold dot expanded to 40 cal consistantly even from a short barreled pistol. Havent seen a test like this on the velocitors but I bet it would be the same.

I haven't tried the velocitors yet, due mainly I've always had excellent results with the yellow jackets. I had an old marlin 22 LR and got outstanding accuracy with that and now I have a CZ 452 and gotten the same results. I figure why mess with a good thing.

I would take the yellow jackets. They are cheaper and you don't need more than a short to kill a squirrel. I also found that the velociters and the stingers completly demo a squirrel if there is a body hit.

and you would be saving it for? Just kidding! CCI HP shorts or CB's do work well also. JP

I guess the main thing for game hunting with the hyper-velocity .22's is that if you want to eat anything, you need a head shot. I have recovered some yellow jacket bullets that expanded to .35"+. They really do make a big hole. Velocitors do not acheive as high expansion because the hollowpoint is shallow and wide, however they penetrate a long ways for long-range shots. For either I would stick with only-head shots for squirrels and rabbits and anything else you dont want to destroy. Just use 40 gr. solid points for body shots if a head shot isnt available most of the time.
