Hi, I have just bought my first Winchester 92. It is a clone made by Armi San Marco, that has a 24'' octagon barrel in 45 Colt, a crescent-shaped steel buttstock, Lyman #2 tang sight, and color casehardened frame. Interestingly the barrel is a 1 in 12 twist, rather tighter than is usual. I plan to use this at my local gun club's informal 100 yard Gallery rifle competitions, any thoughts as to good loads?

I have the Winchester 92 copy by Rossi. I planned to use mine for hunting, plinking so I worked up a load using 20 grains of H110 and 300 grain cast, gas checked bullet sized .454 and lubed with LBT Blue.
Relative to this rifles big brothers, a Winchester 1886 in 45-70, a Winchester 95 in 405 Winchester, this is a mild fun load. My pistol shooting buddies tell me that the cressant steel butt plate makes this a romping stomping shoulder bruiser.
What I did right out of the box was, fired about 70 lapping loads 10 or 15 course grit, 20 medium grit and the rest fine grit for polishing. I used reject 255s that had not been sized or lubed, I rolled them in the grit with steel plate on top and 1/4 inch plate glass underneath and loaded them over 4 or 5 grains of reclaimed 800X.
Made for a beautifull finish in the barrel.
Good luck in your matches.
Jim
