My wife loves to shoot the 44 with big loads, is now wanting the 500. Any thoughts on something tame for the 500? I have not tried too many handloads but have all the stuff for it. Any thoughts?

Check out the www.hodgdon.com (http://www.hodgdon.com) and look at the loads using Titegroup with the lighter bullets (275-350 grains). I have done this and have come up with some very acurate and gentle loads of my own. The recoil on some is comparable to a 38 Special (but not the same energy). Try 325 grains moving at 1200fps.

I just got some of the Speer 325 for the 50 ae. Anyone have any luck with these? Is this the load you were talking about?
I have been using the 325 Speer and 350 Sierra bullets in my PC 500 Hunter. For light loads, I have loaded some Universal Clays with lead bullets. I also load 4227 with the Speer and Sierra. 4227 doesn’t seem to be as sensitive to underloading as 296/110. I light load the 325 Speer with 30 to 38 gr. of 4227 depending what velocity you want and how much recoil you are willing to put up with for range work.

Recoil? There is insignificant recoil if you use Titegroup, and you will save a lot of powder: I use 12.7 grains of Titegroup with a 335 grain bullet on my "plinking" loads.
I have used both Titegroup, which I use for CAS, in the .50 with good results, as well as Universal Clays. Both are fine, neither generates enough gas to get much from the muzzle brake. Personal preference.
H4227 works great for powerful loads, that can be well below full power. 296/110 and Lil'Gun are probably best for full power loads.

Try 12 - 18 grains of Universal. I have used Beartooth Bullets (and need some more) as well as some copper-jacketed bullets I got through Midway (500 per box). The only reason I haven't listed the different loads I use in Load Swap is that I don't have cronograph information.
I have had great success with Lil Gun (38 - 40 gr)and a Cast Performance Flat nose for medium hunting. It works on Moose but I have an aversion to claws and teeth so I will continue to use a heavier bullet for Bear. The 400 and 440 gr bullets do pack a punch.

Corbon makes a 500 special. The case length is a little shorter than the magnum. The box of shells I have here is a 275 grain Barnes X velocity 1350fps 1113 energy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/500special.bmp

In my S&W 500 I have used
H110 42grains
325 Grain Jacketed Bullet
Starline Brass
Large Rifle Primer
H110 35Grains
385 Jacketed Hollow Point
Starline Brass
Large Rifle Primer
And they both shoot great and accurate and are very tame on recoil. From rest I have shot 1.3/4 groups with both loads. I do not have chrono gear :( yet but I hope to have one by the end of January.
Lyman recommends 18 to 20 grains of Unique with a 325 grain cast bullet. Should be interesting.
