Hello all. I was hoping some one could help me out. I have the oportunity to trade a Glock 20 for a S&W Model 29-2 with a 4 inch tube. First of all, what is a good dollar amount for the 29 (if the trade falls through)? Second, where can a find out what all the model numbers signify (ie 29-2, 29-3)?
Thanks,
Mark

The number after the dash is the series. They change the series every so often, when they make slight changes to the model. I don't know where you can out which changes and when they where made. But, I'm sure that S&W would be a great place.

IT is worth $250-400, depending on condition, probably $325-375.

Thanks for the info. Someone else recommended the "Standard Cataloque of Smith and Wesson." Now I have to find that...

Fellows,

A four inch model 29 is a real handful. I would recommend getting some kind of rubber grip that covers the back strap. I have decelerators on mine, and that is most helpful.

Also, I would use hearing protection, even while hunting.

Like Kram455 posted, the SCofS&W is a wealth of info. I bought an issue a year ago....well worth it if you like S&W. Available at Amazon.com
BTW the -2 designation is the last of the Pinned and Recessed cylinders, of which were to become -3. They are just model changes/refinements.
Since its inception the 44 mag the designations were:
Pre-29 first production, (4 or 5 screw frame)
29, 29-1, 29-2, 29-3, etc.

Your best best is the Smith & Wesson forum, those guys are serious, and can tell you all about your gun. That's one of the joys of the internet, and dealing with shooting enthusiasts. Most are very knowledgeable, and willing to help share the info.

A model 29? I love 29's and 629's. Ok the 29-1, 29-2 and so on are product changes to the original model 29. 29-2 is made between 1961 thru 1979...1961 Cylinder stop changed, eliminate trigger guard screw. 1968 delete diamond insert grip. 1969 change to N serial prefix at serial S333454. 1979 6 1/2 barrel dropped in favor of 6" standard barrel length. Whats it worth? A 4 screw NIB is $800.00- to poor condition $200.00 and a 3 screw NIB $500.00 to poor condition $200.00 But to brain dead folks like me prices will be higher.

Mark I would like to say yes, but it's in my book "standard catalog of Smith & Wesson second edition". It is really an excellent guide for retarts like me. Price is $34.95

I'll second that. You probably want a lot more weight on the gun to balance that recoil.
