I am rather new to using the .45-70 Gov'
t cartridge. I have been realoading and casting my own bullets for over 36 years, but have not honestly heard of using CREAM OF WHEAT as a filler on top of the powder load, to prevent lead smears (or leading) in the bore of the rifle.
To counteract the above problem, I have always used copper gas checks for speeds approaching 1000 fps, and my bores have always remained bright and clean looking with no lead smears, shot-after-shot. I DO NOT LIKE TO USE JACKETED BULLETS IN MY .45-70 SHARPS (REPLICA) M-1874.
If someone wasn't "pulling my leg" about the business of CREAM OF WHEAT, how, why and how much does one use?
My favorite load is my home cast 510 gr (wheel weight) lead bullet with 31.0 grains of H-4198 over a #200 CCI primer. I believe about 1548 fps would be very near the "Ball Park" mv.
For just a straight lead bullet, I would use a 405 gr cast lead bullet......it is this one that I would wonder about using the CREAM OF WHEAT on top of the powder, for the filler (15 grains of UNIQUE powder and #200 CCI primer).
Thanks much!

Stalker,
I have used CoW with my 45-70 loads when using Unique and 2400...I use an old Lee powder measure to throw a wheat charge. :)
get the level of the CoW to where it will compress good when you seat the bullet. Now with you using a single shot, like me, then you don't have to worry about really good compression. Using this in a lever gun, well, is beyond my experience. I can tell you however that my groups tightened up about 1/4" all around on those loads...and thats with jacketed bullets as well as cast with GC and without.
There is also somthing that Winchester used to make called Grex that works the same way...but can't find a whole lot on it.

that's the idea...use the inert filler (Cream of Wheat) to add volume to a reduced load so that it compresses as the bullet is seated. Have aslo used grits (see below). Problem is that the stuff adds weight...not a lot, but everything that gets ejected from the muzzle counts.
--------
At last there is a use for Cream of Wheat that doens't make me gag....realize some people actually eat this stuff...pretty close to wallpaper paste.
Not likely to have a Tub of cream of wheat (believe it's sold in a cardboard can), tend to use corn meal or grits...it's a Southern vs. Northern thing I guess.
Are there other grain creams?...cream of rye...cream of rice...cream of millet?
Once took a lot of time and effort to make thick 45/70 cases by press fitting cut off .30-06 tubes into 45/70 cases. Lot of work, and constantly keeping a watch out for a .30-06 tube/sleeve being fired down the bore. Idea is that you plan out the insert so that the tube sits below the 45/70 case mouth, the end of the tube acts as a seating stop for the bullet , and it press fit tight and won't shoot out.
After all that work, the grits filler shot just as well.
Best use for grits I've ever heard of - surely not fit for human consumption! :p
And, yes - there's a Cream of Rice product.

We got grits, cheese grits, and even can have fried grits (that would be the grits equivalent of hash browns) Have instant grits (which is about like instant coffee...a pretty poor substitute for the real thing).
What in the world would you do with Cream of Rice....am just assuming it's a food product...iS it something served oriental nursing homes?
Got to be a northern passion to cream various gains...think we'd just toss them in the still...we call the creamed stage "mash".

LOL. Next time I'm having a shot of 'old stump-puller' I'll remind everyone that it's REALLY health food.... :D
