I'm considering buying a rem 673 300 saum. Do any of you guys have one? If you do how does it perform? It seems to me that the short magnums are all the rage nowadays.

Thumb,
I really like the 673 platform, and have considered one of these myself. I like the laminated stock, as it the best of both worlds, and I don't care anything about silver guns, so this combination is just about ideal for me as a hard use rifle.
I'm not real sure about the 300 short, of any kind, I am of the opinion that most variations of the 30 are just a slight improvement over the thirty naught 6.
The short mags are probably so attractive to most, because they represent such a compromise, and can do many missions fairly well, without having a specific niche. Although most have been chambered in fairly long barreled rifles, so their handling characteristics are not that much better than standard wieght rifles, they just slightly shade standard calibers reach wise, and they would seem to me to be incompatible with the real long heavy bullets. Unless I find a real good deal on one, 06 will stay my "big" thirty.
The 350 in 673 really turns my head, though, as this is truly my favorite caliber, and if I wasn't already blessed with a 700 classic, I would own this one, too. I still may, as what the wife doesn't know won't hurt her, huh?
Good luck to you thumb, I hope that it lives up to your expectations.

Today I handled a 673 for the first time, it was a 6.5 mag. It seemed to fit me fairly well too. Usually most guns don't. I'm 6'3'' and have long arms and a long neck. If that rifle would have been in 300 it would be here this evening.

The .350 Mag is calling my name. Some recoil-shy hunter around here will trade one in eventually, and maybe it'll follow me home to MikeG's House of Refuge for Lonely Big Bores.....

Amen, brother Mike.
My all time favorite caliber, which was just a matter of luck for me, because I was actually looking for the Whelen, when I happened across mine. I did some direct comparisons with the numbers, not realizing until afterwards that the 350 was posted with an 18 inch barrel. With the longer barrel, this cartridge really shines.
IMR 4320 and 3031, are excellent powders for accuracy, and the ball powders, Win 748, and AA2520 are capable of amazing velocities. When you pick it up, I'd be happy to share my data.
I'm middle of the road for recoil tolerance, but its not all that bad. It puts me in mind of a light rifle in 06.
Good luck, let me know what you come up with.
Steve
