Hello all.
I'm wondering, I look on www.cheaperthandirt.com and I see all these different targets and have no clue which is which.
I'm used to shooting at an indoor pistol range (targets hang level with me from cieling) now since I've moved all I have is an outdoor range with no targets or anything to hold them.
Where can I get a stand that will hold them at the sight I'm used to (so I'm not shooting downward into the ground when standing) and targets that are the outline of a person (Silouette, spelling?) Thanks!

Make a frame, 2 old 2x4's should last you a while if you built it like a upper case t and hang stuff away from the center beam. If you want to be fancy, screw some corkboard to the horizontal beam and take thumb tacks.

I'm printing targets on my printer and cutting the tops and bottoms off tin cans, a bit cheaper that way. I'm setting targets up at different ranges instead of constantly shooting at a fixed range.
Don't know if you were reffering to the big 3'x4' sheet targets. Those got too pricey for me.

These things are cool, but a bit too spendy.

I use a wire stretched between two trees and close pins to hold the targets or a cardboard backing with targets pinned or masking taped to it. I print targets and loading data sheets from this site. The people targets I would have to make from a roll of some kind of cheep paper if I was shooting them. I would paint my disign or silloette on with a stinsel and spray paint.

I got a large old real estate yard sign from an agent. It had gotten a little rusty and they can't have that kind of image ya know!

It has a one piece steel outer frame so I can tape targets to it, but usually string across and use clothes pins to hold the targets! ez to put in and pull out of ground, fits in the trunk.

I attch 1" pvc to the vertical arms and you can place your cord at any height you want. Use clothesline cord for best results

I admit this idea came from another chap at the club. However it works very well!

I found some, *ahem*, "slightly used" Kerry for President signs that will be recycled into dandy little target holders at the deer camp.....

99,

After destroying several purchased stands and constructing many variations on large, weighty, cumbersome, space-sucking home-made target stands, some years ago I constructed the totally lightweight, portable takedown stand I still use. Bear with me, now...

I use 3/4" threaded pvc. The stand uses 2 tees to form the letter "H" when viewed looking down at the base of the stand, and just inside each side of each tee is also a tee that is screwed in so that this inside "tee" points upward, with a 3/4"x4" straight pipe screwed in that also points upward. Each tee forming the outside of the "H" has, on both ends, a 3/4"x 4" straight piece of pvc threaded in place. To connect the "H" across the middle (between the 2 upward-pointing tees), I use different lengths of threaded pvc with one connecting joint; these make the target stand different widths to accomodate different target sizes, with some width to spare.

Now grab a length of 1/2" unthreaded pvc pipe and cut off 2 lengths, depending on how high you want your target off the ground. Drop the 2 lengths down the 4" pvc into the upward pointing tees. The target is taped across these. Now grab a length of 1/2" thin metal pipe about 8' long, cut in half, smooth the cuts with a file, then slide them through the outer tees. These lengthen the base and provide stability in the wind.

This stand doesn't have a vertical cross-bar, I find I don't need it. The tape holds just fine. I use blue 3M #2090 tape; it's the tape used to mask edges when painting interior surfaces. It pulls away from paper and has enough residual stickiness to use the same pieces all day long.

When you get this together, and then after hitting parts of it with fliers, it'll be obvious which pieces you'll want to cement together and which you won't.

I originally used the 1/2" metal pipe for the vertical "sides" of the target, but when shooting a rifle from over 100yds, I'd occasionally send a flier through one of the vertical metal pipes the target is taped to. Hitting these tended to tear apart pieces of the base, also. Using the plastic pvc is cheaper, lighter, and less noisy to have around, and will break at the impact point, sparing the base. Simply pull out the broken stub, and insert a new vertical piece.

What's NOT a joke about this? I don't have to pound the stand into the dirt to get it to stand up, don't need a pickup truck to haul it around, the whole stand weighs about 3 pounds, complete with metal pipe, and if I hit part of it with an errant round, I only have to replace a small part of the stand to rebuild it.

The traget barn in dayton ohio seems to have some pretty good stands and wide selection of targets. Sorry I don't have the web address handy but I'm sure if you search google for target barn and dayton it will come up.
