Gentlemen:

Do you know of any available guides to proper consumer storage of black powder?

Hello Ralph,
I have been using black powder since the 1970s. I have always read that you should keep it in a sort of cool. dry place. Naturally away from any flames, heat, kids, etc.. I have always kept my black powder cans in a wooden box with other gun stuff, cleaning and shooting supplies, etc.. I just keep it locked up in that box sitting under my desk in my bedroom. It is where I can keep an eye on it, and is in a consistant invironment as far as temperature and humidity goes (I have central heat/ac). Too much cool, damp, moist conditions will ruin black powder. But the way I keep it I have cans of bp and pyrodex that I have had for years and it is still just as good and shootable as ever.
Take care,

The ATF site used to have storage requirements for up to 50lbs and over listed for commercial users. I have used an old refrigerator with a hasp on the door for storing powder. Works fine and is air tight.

I have an old metal hanging file cabinet, about 30"X18"X24" high. Lined the interior with a couple of layers of wood, close to 1" thick and a cover on the top that just sits on the cabinet without being attached. I haven't done it yet but I want to put the cabinet on at least 2 wheels and attach a rope to it so it can be dragged quickly out of danger. Emery
