Hey guys, I have a Ruger NMSBH 44mg with a 7.5" barrel. I'd like to put some sort of optics on it. Right now I am leaning towards getting one of those holographic style sights. My first question is has anyone used any of that type of sight on a pistol, looking for any kind of a review. Other type of optic suggestions would be well taken also. My second question is what is the best weaver style mount to go on my ruger, where can I find it, and can I install it or will a gunsmith need to do it? I know absolutly nothing about handgun hunting or scope mounting, I've always just used open sights, but now I want to hunt with the 44 and decieded I need a little help opticaly.
Thanks in advance, you guys are always a wealth of knowledge and eager to help, this is a great site.

Might consider trading for a Super Blackhawk Hunter; that gun comes with scope rings and they are easily attached to the barrel. When it's all said and done, you'll end up with a very sturdy mount system, and considering the cost of an aftermarket mount on your current gun, probably money ahead.

Never used optics on handguns so that's about all I can suggest.....

IMO the red dot/holographic are great for fast acquisition/speed type shooting, but for hunting I prefer a good handgun scope (read Leupold or Burris). I use a 2x on most of my optically sighted handguns because it is very difficult for me to hold anything more than that steadily, especially offhand. I also find that the red dot/holo type sights tend to wash out target details, especially at longer distances.

As was stated above, Hamilton Bowen does outstanding work, as I can personally attest. He built up a Ruger Bisley in .45 Colt for me, and it is my "go to" gun when I take off for the woods.

I've hunted with handguns for more years than I care to admit. What works for me, including on the .44 magnum is a Leupold 2x scope. I don't care for red dots on hunting handguns because of the battery factor. Keep it simple. For a mount, there is none better than the SSK TSOB. They will have to mount it for you and it will cost about $100, but worth every penny. The clamp on type Burris and Weave mounts that clamps on the barrel and use the rear sight mounting screw to lock it down work OK but look like crap IMO. The TSOB uses three to six 8-40 screws to hold it down and it will take any punishment you can dish out. My FA .454 has this mount along with all my TC handguns and they will not fail.
I also second the idea of getting a Ruger SuperB Hunter if you want to mount a scope and keep your current SuperB bare-backed
