I need to knw your opinion on a BAR rifle. Would the Bar Safari with a steel receiver be better the the BAR lightweight with aircraft aluminun reciever or the other way around?

Better for what? Toting on a hike , shooting stability , recoil, wear and tear ?

I have a steel BAR in 7MM Mag. It is a great rifle for 4 wheeler to blind hunting, but it might be a bit heavy to carry. If I were walking, I would be tempted to try the aluminum receiver. The lower recoil of the gas operation in a magnum cal is an advantage. As I get older, I like the part about firing and keeping the scope on target for backup. Good luck.

I would use it for deer and some target shooting. I'm leaning toward a BAR in .243. I'm just not sure if I want a Safari or Lightweight.

Just a guess, but I would imagine that with a .243, going with the lightweight would be ideal. You don't need the heavier gun to help eliminate felt recoil, especially since you are going with a BAR model instead of a bolt action. The only thing I would ever worry about with aluminum would be the wear and tear, but again, with a .243 cartridge I wouldn't imagine it would be a problem. If you were choosing a .300WinMag, it might be a different story, but I think you would get a great rifle in .243 w/ the lightweight BAR.

I have hunted quite a bit with a BAR MK II Safari with BOSS in .270. Great gun, very accurate, very reliable, very good looking (IMHO).... very heavy. At the time 90% of my hunting was done out of shooting houses that overlooked greenfields. I always had a rest for the gun to shoot off of. I've found that for a gun you will be carrying around a lot, or one that you will be making a lot of off hand shots with, that BAR was just too heavy for me. It wore a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10x50 which added to its weight. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love that gun, just now that my hunting styles have changed, so has my choice of weapon.
