Took out my new rem 700 cdl in 270 for the first session. Decided not to break in my barrel and have fun. Anyway i used rem exp corlokt and got good groups...here is my question. I took a 3 shot group and 2 shots were almost touching and then one was like 3-4 inches off! Me and my buddy think it does that becuase its brand new and the barrel needs to "break in". I will also try some more expensive ammo, maybe winchester silver ballistic tipps. Any suggestions would be great! Gave it a good cleaning when i got home so the groups might improve next time!

It would depend which of the three shots is the "flier" and if it is always the same numbered shot every time , as in always the first ,second or third. I have an ADL .270 that does the same thing , two shots touching and the third allows the group to usually average just under an inch, nothing to complain about for sure but it does reak havoc on the ego. If it happens randomly in the group it is probably shooter error(flinching , trigger pull what have you ) if it is always the last shot than it could be a barrel heat issue a .270 sporter weight barrel can get pretty warm after 2 or three shots. If the next group after cool down goes back to point of aim than it might be the issue although 3-4 " off is a bit more than I would expect for a third . Not sure how many groups total you shot , but if there were enough to detect a pattern to the mystery shot it usually helps sort things out. Many a perfect cloverleaf group is ruined by shooter anticipation of that third shot , I know I try to beat the bullet to the paper with my eye most times and that only can mean that I botched some element of proper shooting form .

does the rifle have a long trigger pull or a heavy one because that may also be the issue

Fliers are normal, it shoots good dont it. Barrel break in on a hunting gun is a bit of foolishness anyway. The barrel will tighten its groups a bit after it does break in but youll never notice with it in the field. Off the bench maybe. I got a 270 I like and use the cheap stuff for play and the good bullets for game.

hornady custom ammo is great I shoot it with great results and I have the targets to prove it. The gun is an over the shelf 700 in 30-06. Did you clean the barrel initially and any time between the shots in question?Like a previous posting stated ,barrel heat can cause these problems as well.

Check and see if the stock is touching the barrel anywhere. Just run a dollar bill between the barrel and the stock. If it does not slide down to within a few inches of the action your stock may be exerting some force on the barrel.

Just remove a little wood in the barrel channel by using some sandpaper wrapped around a socket. Reseal the wood with a good clear finish and put back togather. I've found most 700's shoot better with the bbl free floated.

While you got the action out might be a good time to adjust the trigger down to 3.5 pounds and put a coat of oil on the parts of the action you won't see for a while.

Good luck with that new Remington. I have them in 243, 280, 308, 8mm mag and love im.

The above mentioned procedure is not a save all. what happens if when you relieve the barrel channel, your rifle shoots worse (some do, some don't) you will have one heck of a time duplicating the fore end pressure, not to mention it is a pain in the neck. If you are intent on see if your rifle will shoot tighter or more consistantly there is a temporary solution. Cut some thin plastic shims, I like the clear plastic semi rigid plastic that anything that hangs on a hook in the store is now packaged in. Place these shims behind the recoil lug on your rifle, use only enough shims to float the barrel free from the stock, don't over do it. Go to the range and test drive it and note if your grouping changed. make sure it is maintained over 3 or 4 groups. If things have improved do a proper free float and bedding job. I'm sure the techniques are in the forum archives somewhere.
Good Luck.
