got my rifle back from remington (the one from my very first posting the 300 rsaum) The verdict from them was the "freebore" was misaligned and undersized, they replaced the bolt, corrected the problem and polished the bore. The way I take it freebore must be a euphamism for headspacing problem. A friend of mine told me that remington has had a problem with this. He did not know at the time that the rifle in question was a remington. He builds custom rifles all from 700's so I have no reason to think he is biased, besides he does have an engineering degree. I have not shot it yet but I did chamber a round and it was much, much better. Has remington let the quality fall by the wayside for the sake of keeping something new on the market ? which seems to be the standard for everything these days.
