This is my first post on these boards, so please don't tear into me too badly if my search missed an obvious thread that has already been posted.

At any rate, I have several boxes of WWII era .30-06 cartridges that my grandfather gave to me several years back (in the nieghborhood of 20). They have been sitting in cool, dry locations everywhere I have lived over the years, but I wouldn't dare try to fire them.

Most of these I would just dispose of because they are "normal" cartridges. However, there are at least two "special" ones of which I would like to decommission them, but keep them. They are:

1. Armor Piercing round (one of the few legal ones to own)

2. A non-WWII era (I think) JSP with the following stamped on it: .30-06 SPRG SUPER-X

Anyway, advice on how/where to destroy the old stuff I don't want and how to make safe the couple of cartirdges I do I want would be appreciated. I would call my LGS, but they are closed today.

Howdy sleestax,
Why wouldn't you want to fire this ammo? Corrosive primers? I fire old WWII ammo regularly, with no problemas in my M1 Garand. AP, Tracer, and Ball all function flawlessly after 60+ years. I just clean my gun after firing surplus ammo. You can use a kinetic bullet puller to remove the bullet from the case, pour out the powder and soak the primed case in a bucket of water. Personally, I would just keep 'em just like you have stored them........or have a Bangfest at the local range or gravel pit.

Shoot it or sell it to a shooter or collector. I've got 1943 .303 British ammo here that's as old as I am and in better shape than I am.

If you want to de-activate a couple of rounds, find someone who handloads. It's a case of pulling the bullet, dumping the powder on the lawn (good fertilizer) popping the primer and reseating the bullet.

Bye

You are correct that the stuff marked SUPER-X is commercial- it's Winchester ammo.
The mil surp you have is not dangerous to have, if that's your worry- it's not gonna do anything.
Shoot it or sell/give to a collector or another shooter who'd use it.

it just so happens that I have a "backyard" business doing just that, "de-commissioning" ammo. For a small fee + postage, I'll rid you of your problem, one shot at a time... :)

Thanks for the advice. I like the bangfest idea the best. I am actually friendly with my local PD, so maybe I will donate the AP rounds to them if they are interested in them (except for one or two that I would keep for posterity).

.......going out to the dog farm in a week and among other things 'decommission' a few hundred rounds. Send the stuff to me and I will relieve you of the problem.

Unwanted or defective ammo at our local gunrange is placed in 5 gallon buckets filled with diesel/solvent mix and left to soak for several weeks. Then a pit is dug in a remote area of the range and the strained ammo is dumped in the hole with several buckets of water to promote rapid deterioation. Been doing it for years.

IF it has been stored well (and if the example round is typical, it's been stored well) that ammo is shootable.

IF you want to kill it, then pull the bullets (lhere an inertia puller would be the one least likely to mark the bullet or case...just suff some cotton down into the bottom of the puller to soften the landing and keep the bullet from bounching back and dinging the case neck). With bullet out, dump the powder (for such a small amount, feel free to flush it), and give the primer a frew drops of oil from the inside. Re seat the bullet and it's done.

For large amounts of junk ammo, will save it up for one of the fishing trips...take it out into the blue water of the Gulf of Mexico and sprinkle it in. May not be enviromentally friendly, but seems about as safe as I can make it.

Is oine area on old maps that is marked off as ordence disposal, so I figure a few rounds of small arms ammo isn't going to distrub things too greatly considering the big stuff that god dumped there in WWII.

If you really want to dispose of it instead of donating it to a local range or someone on this site, you can call your local PD and they will either send someone out or tell you where to take it. Had to do this when my grandfather passed away several years ago (was unable to bring the ammo back at the time).
