No details of how big the bear was or where it was killed, but was shot over the carcass of another bear it had "cached".

Now take a close look at this bear, and tell me you think a 30-06 is the rifle to use in the Alders, to hunt him, or even the one he killed! :D That boy is 375 H&H, or 450/400 NE 3" fodder!
Probably borrowed Alyeska's .500 S&W ! :p

Kinda makes me feel undergunned with my 375wby. For some reason 300 grains just doesn't seem all that impressive when looking at that bear.

Someone is going to need a BIG wall for that guy!!!
Naw - will take a full body mount on hind legs and facing the front door to do this one justice! :p

Dugaboy1, I once met a man in Montana that had been attacked by a griz. his face, neck and shoulders were very scarred up. That was all visible from the collar up. You could tell he was still having nightmares.
His one peice of advice was, if you are hunting deer in the deer woods, then use a deer gun. If you are hunting deer in bear woods, use the D-mn biggest thing you can handle, and practice every chance you can with it.
Hence the .458 winnie, sometime in my life I am actually going to get to Ak, probably no bear hunting. But there will be some wild salmon on the grill anyways.

Rumors are still floating around. Initially, the rumor was it was killed out of Kotzebue, but I couldn't believe that. Now other rumors are surfacing that it was killed around Sand Point. That is more believable, at least to me, but I'll hold back until I hear some confirmed reports. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd guess somewhere along the Alaskan Peninsula or Kodiak, but haven't heard for sure yet.

Has any new information surfaced on this one. Where, range spotted, time to stalk, caliber used, number of shots needed, anything else helpful?

My view point is that, Big Bears when close make big guns feel very small; and all bears are Big when heading my direction or intently looking me over inside 50 yards. I have experienced this feeling twice of the supposedly big guns feeling very small. Once with a .454 in hand and the other with a .458. Just my 2 cents woth.

A fella on another board said he was able to talk to the guide that took this bear. Location was somewhere along the Alaska Peninsula, no specifics as to where exactly. Hunter was a shooting a 416, but no mention of which cartridge (Rigby, Remington, Taylor, etc...). No mention of shot distance.
That's all I have for now.
