Hi,

I've got a question regarding the sights on the Browning 92. As most or all of you are aware, this rifle has a small blade front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear with a rectangular notch in the center, the idea being to line up the notch with the blade. The trouble is, my eyes have a hard time getting a good sight picture with this arrangement. It takes me a long time to line everything up, and I would prefer sights that permit faster aiming.

I've been perusing the Midway catalog and they have a plethora of replacement sights. I'm leaning toward the Marbles semi-buckhorn for the rear and a gold bead front sight. The thing is, there's quite a variety of heights available for each, and I'm not sure which combination would be best for the 92. I'm not interested in a tang sight for this rifle.

Has anyone replaced the sights on the Browning 92 with Marbles sights? If so, what did you choose for front/rear? If possible, please tell me your specific choices with regard to height, etc. Thanks.

Duck, I can't help you on the M-92 info, but do have some thoughts. I really like gold bead front sites, have them on all my open sighted rifles and hand guns. I get the Williams brand but bet Marbles are just as good, I like a peep site on the back of the action, and remove the rear site off the bbl. and fill the dovetail with a small piece of blued steel. Very fast on target and good for my older eyes. Once your zeroed you can shoot some pretty good groups with that set-up, and the rear peep will not cover any part of your target (deer, elk ect.) that your aiming at unlike that buckhorn sight..41

Hi 41,

Thanks for the reply. The reason I wanted to stick with a buckhorn is twofold: (1) my desire to maintain the "traditional" look of the 92; (2) I might take up Cowboy Action Shooting with this rifle and I believe rear peep sights are not allowed (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

I do like the idea of the rear sight not covering any part of the target; that's a good point I hadn't considered. Perhaps I need to reconsider using a tang sight. Are they allowed in CAS?

I really enjoy shooting this little rifle. Just wish the sights were better.

I had the same problem and used the AO Systems front blade sight with the regular rear. Makes a big difference. Don't like the brass beads - depending on the direction of the sun, the glint off the bead messes my shooting up. - C

Duck, SASS allows tang sights, but not receiver sights. You can download their rule book on SASS.com. Before you do anything, though, check out your local club and see what they allow/require. Unless you're going to State and national meets, the local rules are all you need to worry about.
