I have a 12 year old, meticulously cared for 7600 in 30-06 caliber that has performed flawlessly up to this year, However, this season I am experiencing a persistant and constant malfuntion with round chambering. The gun chambers the round normally and locks into battery just fine, But the bolt will NOT extract the round, the bolt simply does not seem to be locking onto the cartridge, I've tried several different cartridges with no result, same thing happens all the time. I understand the requirements to remove the barrel and bolt but can't get the slide tube assembly off as it is tight and seems to need some type of tool to loosen. I realize the short and simple answer to this problem is to take the rifle to a smith, but we are currently in the midst of our 2 week rifle season right now and not having the rifle leaves me with only sticks and stones and harsh language to use if I do. can anyone suggest a do it youself solution or an I stuck with using a Gunsmith right now?

Honestly, I'd get it to the closest 'smith you can find. It sounds like a broken or seized extractor. While I love these Remington pumps, I don't have any experience dissambling them beyond simple cleaning. Sorry I couldn't provide more help.

Check your chamber first, and make sure it is clean and not rough, then check the extractor, they have a tendency to chip and will not hold the rim of the cartridge. If it's chipped take it to a gunsmith . Most will have new extractors on hand if they do any Remington work, and should have the gun back to you within 2 days, if he's not busy he could even have it back the same day.
