Hey guys, i was just wondering what your opinions are as far as magazines that are worth subscribing to. I have been picking up a few different magazines when i head up to my camp, so far i have gotten guns and ammo, shooting times and gunworld. guns and ammo was pretty much a waste as far as i can tell, basically, it looked like advertisements in article form. gunworld was fairly intersting but it didn't really get much depth, shooting times seemed to be closer to my speed but it was the new for 05 special, so i really don't know what to expect from them. so what is worth my time and hard earned money? (p.s. i just got single issues of the above metioned mags, not subscriptions)

Precision Shooting / The Accurate Rifle - heavy reading compared to the fluff you get in most magazines, these days, but definitely good information.

I'm giving Rifle / Handloader / Successful Hunter one more year to see how it goes.

The American Handgunner is looking better to me, all the time....

Let Shooting Times subscription lapse. Haven't subscribed to G&A for quite a while.

Wolfe Publishing does it for me - Handloader, Rifle & Successful Hunter.

Also get the American Rifleman and North American Hunter with my Endowment and Life subscriptions to those organizations.

Handloader, Rifle, American Rifleman. Beyond that the pickings are pretty lean.

Handloader, Ameican Hunter, Bugle (Wayne Van Zoll always has a good article), and Wyoming Wildlife.

Rifle and Handloader are about the only ones I read any more. Well, American Rifleman, too.

Rifle and Handloader get an A, Successful Hunter B-.I will miss Seyfried at all of them.
I choose the Rifleman as my NRA publication. It seems to have recovered somewhat of late.
Would love new monthly columns from Elmer. If I do good on this side, I'll talk with him on the other.

Thet seem to have a few months (during the Summer I think) that they don't put one out , I think thet onlt do 9 or 10 issues a year. I may be off base though , but it does seen theres a time when you see the same issue on the rack for more than a month(?)

The fact that you ask this forum that kind of question leads me to suggest what I have thought for a while.
I would love to see some sort of written periodical form of Shooters Forum.

The hunting stories don't need to be about just big bucks all of the time, they just need to be real.
The re-loading information I've gained from this site has been great. And the day to day information offered by "just hunters" has been helpful as well.
Anyway, a lot of this information could be re-printed into articles. The swap load section alone has kept me busy.
Its just a thought.

Merry Christmas

Well, I'll put it this way.
This Forum has become my"gun magazine" because most of the others are full of hype.

Hope that idea wasn't a can of worms

American Handgunner is the only gunzine I subscribe to anymore, though I will buy GUNS off the stand once in a while if there's an article of special interest to me. I only load for a couple of rifle calibers anymore, so the more technical mags like Handloader and Rifle don't interest me as much as they used to. When I want to read gun stuff, I come here!

I've learned a lot here, seen some "interesting" viewpoints, argued with a few people, preached a bit, and reminisced a little. And I'll keep coming back as long as y'all let me!

Precision Shooting/The Accurate Rifle are tops. Handloader, and Rifle are very good, but I don't know how much longer they will be, although Barsness, Scovill and Venturino are good. American Hunter/Rifleman have improved, and the articles by Canfield are very good for those interested in military firearms. I haven't subscribed to Guns and Ammo in a long time, and am letting my scrip to Shooting Times lapse as we speak. I like American Handgunner, and am thinking about getting Guns as well to replace Shooting Times, because the writers there seem to be pretty straight shooters (no pun intended) as to the quality and accuracy of the firearms they review. At least I know I'm not going to get rave reviews on Lorcins or Ravens there. One other magazine that I find interesting is Backwoodsman. It has alot of blackpowder and milsurp articles as well as hunting/trapping type articles. I also take a few archery magazines, and that venue has the same problems that the gun rags have, i.e. trying to say good things about lousy products so they can sell more ad space.

I like jb12string's idea about an online magazine in the Forum, but who's going to enforce deadlines? Maybe there can be a section where budding writers can post their articles as desired without deadlines, but with space limitations etc. Another obstacle would be content. I know I do alot of shooting/handloading/hunting, but I'm not sure everyone wants to hear about it.

I subscribe to Precision Shooting, Accurate Rifle, The Single Shot Exchange, ASSRA Journal, American Rifleman, Double Gun Journal, and Black Powder Cartridge News and highly recommend them all. I pick up Rifle, Handloader and Petersons Hunting occasionally at the news stand.

In addition to those already mentioned, I would add: Fur-Fish-Game. An outdoor mag from the "old school".

By the way, that's George the third.

I still get Shooting Times, but it seems to be becoming just a mag full of gun ads as G&A has....
Wing and Shot is great for uplanders
American Rifleman too.
Last but not least is Gun Tests, just for the reviews.

Precision Shooting and Accurate Rifle are the best publications in the U.S. The information in these two magazines is absolutely fantastic most of the time. I wait for them every month with great anticipation. You must subscribe as they are not on the newsstand because they refuse to be sold that way. www.precisionshooting.com

Varmint Hunter is also good if you like that kind of hunting. They have some great technical articles but some very stupid stuff written by members also. www.varminthunter.org

If you are into small and subcaliber rifles, get Small Caliber News. www.smallcaliber.com It is quarterly, as is Varmint Hunter Magazine.

If you might like to read about cowboy action shooting, equipement, loads, and such, Shoot! magazine would be good reading.

Rifle and Handloader are must haves. I also like Soldier of Fortune, Guns (John Taffin rocks), and Small Arms Review.
I pick up a hunting mag every now and then when I find an article of particular interest. Otherwise I live my own hunting and outdoor adventures.

Surprisingly, I picked up a copy of Sports Afield a few months ago and was amazed at their turn around. My understanding is the owner of Safari Press bought the magazine a while back and I am impressed.

Right now, I've dropped all subscriptions. In the past few years I've subscribed to Rifle, Handloader, and The Accurate Rifle, all of which seem to changing direction. I noticed in the last few issues of Rifle and Handloader there was at least as much advertising as copy in the middle of the articles. Funny that the advertisments were of the manufacture that the copy was written about. Which is fine, I guess, if the articles are truthful.

I have long been an avid reader of many hunting and shooting publications. I grew up in a home that had the American Rifleman as a standard monthly delivery. Over the years I have seen both interesting and rather boring articles in all the big publications. It seems that they all go through transition periods every once in a while. Currently I subscribe to G&A, Outdoor life, and Field and Stream. I will look over several other gun mags at the Wally World when I visit and purchase them on an "as needed" basis.

Over the last couple of years I have been laid up for a month at a time having knee surgeries. I have read ALL the hunting and shooting mags available........cover to cover, and find that they all seem to cover the same topics at one time or another. They all have had a lot of new writing material lately due to all the new WSSM and small caliber cartridges to hit the market. You don't have to be a highly educated person to figure out who is sucking up to the industry and who gives it straight. Very rarely will you find a "bad" report on any of the newest, baddest, wham-banger cartridge or firearm. You have to sift through the chaft and decide what makes good shooting sense and what is mostly hype.

I read the articles that interest me and skip over the ones that don't. I used to subscrive to GUNS and found that their articles were more informative to the Cowboy Shooting and the Assault genre than what I was interested. They may have changed, but I found no useful information for myself at the time. I must admit that I let my NRA subscription lapse and no longer receive their periodicals. I just had some problems with some of the NRA's opinions and decided to change my support to other institutions such as VCDL. I liked their magazines and their work for the American gunowner, but did not support some of their stances, or rather, how they went about supporting their agendas. (I really believe that lobbyist organizations, all included, have poisoned the water with all politicians and that the country would be better without their clout). But that is another topic.

Gun rags all have their good and bad days. Just depends on who they think their largest reader base is at the time. That is who they will tailor their columns to.

American Rifleman and Handloader are it . Ever so often pick up Rifle , rarely pick up SA , OL or F@S ...
Tuff when most all yur favorite writers have been gone for a quarter century or more ..
In Handloader , Venturino seems OK after one or two articles , have always liked him . Seyfried definetly will be missed , but miss Gary Sitton more ..
