I am looking into purchasing a Garand from CMP and need a little advice. I am leaning towards the service grade. What is the difference between the standard service grade and Greek issue. I will be shooting whatever I buy and want a gun in the best condition without getting into the high end stuff.
thanks

I honestly don't think you'll geat a beater out of the CMP. I have 2 from the CMP, 1 an H&R the other a Winnie. Both were service grade, both shoot as well as any Match gun.
Order it, you will not be dissappointed.
A gun rag writer was asked this question in a past issue. His answer was: CMP Select = NRA Very Good, Service Grade = Good + and Greek issue would be from Good to Fair.
My take from his answer is that Service Grade would still be in pretty good condition and no problem with parts or functioning. A Greek Issue would be one that has been around the block several times, rode hard and put away wet.

I am a long time CMP buyer. Agree with the comment about CMP M-1 conditions. My current choice for a shooting M-1 from CMP would be a Danish first and a US issue second, if only for the price advantage. The Collector Grade M-1s really are nice. I received mine in "like new" condition. On the other hand, a service grade will serve you well for many years, and when it is time to rebarrel, you still will have a decent rifle

I'm interested in getting a Garand in the best shooting condition I can. What is the price difference in the 'collector grades' and a 'service grade- very good condition'? The metal/bore/wear condition matters to me, not the wood. How do I go about getting one of the CMP rifles? Not familiar with this at all. Thanks! Lee.

The link to CMP is a good place to start. I would suggest checking with some local gun clubs that shoot the National Match Course and are affiliated with the CMP. The CMP or the NRA can identify local affiliated clubs. You do not have to be a club member or NRA member to shoot in the matches, they are open to the public. I run the high power rifle matches at our local club and we get CMP discounts for those who compete in the matches. Hope this helps. All the best...
