.40-60 WCF
A smaller cartridge of less power and recoil, the .40-60 was the sole caliber under .45 offered in the Model 1876 Winchester, intended to give higher velocity with increased energy and flatter trajectory than the smaller Model 1873 cartridges but without the heavy recoil of a .45-75. Its tapered case was 1.87 inches long.
Employing a 62-grain blackpowder charge to drive a relatively light 210-grain solid lead bullet at 1,533 fps at the muzzle - some 233 fps faster than a .44-40's 200-grain bullet - the .40-60 nicely filled the bill as a balanced deer round of that era. Strangely, rifles for this cartridge were given an unusually slow rifling twist of one in 40 inches, which ruled out the use of heavier bullets. Produced as late as 1925. there is no evidence the .40-60 was ever loaded with smokeless powder.
