Was in the woods the other day hunting(HOGS OF COURSE). Thought that I herd some low level grunting.Saw some movement out of the corner of my eye. HOGS! Here they come. There were 6 altogether. They were just feeding along. They didn't even have a clue that I was there. If I would have had my Ruger 10/22 I would have killed two of them. Let me explain. I was up at my hunting club walking an area that I have seen a small amount of hog sign including one fairly large track. I hadn't planned to do any "serious" hunting so I thought that I might as well carry my Puma 92 in .454 Casull. It has the 16.5 in bbl. and it's great to carry in the dense cover. I had planned to walk the edges of a stream to do some hog recon and it is fairly thick, especially where the feeder streams come into it. I had stopped for a drink of water when here they come. All six were the size of a house cat. Field dressed, the whole bunch of them wouldn't have weighed 40 lbs. Of course when the six came strolling by,I sez to myself that the sow or sows can't be far behind. So I got ready and waited. For a freakin' half hour!! No sows? Can't figure it out. Have seen some medium sized hog track in the general area that I saw the shoats but---why no sows?? Hope that there ole' lady didn't get hurt or killed.(Untill I had a chance to do it.)----GOOD HUNTING---pruhdlr

I agree with VTDW... she either knew you were there, was laid up where it was very comfortable, or she was dead. I'm around hogs quite a bit and see these little ones out and about quite a bit. Quite often I've had hogs this size literally walk right up and sniff my boots.

Never herd that a hog(sow)would"stalk"a man.I have seen one or two shoats by themselves before but never as many as 6.Your right ref. the sow could have been watching me. Prior to the sighting,I wasn't moving as quietly as usual. The bottom was thick in spots and I had just jumped(stumbled)accross a water hole. The WX had just warmed into the high 60's. The last several days it has been cold. She might have been laid up in the perfect spot and said"you want to go eat,go ahead,I'm staying here".------ Things are looking up at the hunting club now that I have been seeing hog sign. A year ago I thought that they were just movin' through the area. Now there might be a simi-huntable population. The club is 2260 acres with pine barrens and alot of deep bottoms with simi black mud. There are a total of 15 members of which only 6-8 really hunt, and they only are interested in hunting deer. I don't care so much about deer but I do LOVE to call yotes, crows, and hunt hogs. Nobody else in the club does that. We can ride ATV's on the property also,so the entire club is accessable. Will go back into the same area this coming week to "look around" some more. I have to determine approximately how many hogs that we have before I start hunting them.I will set up a bait/feeding station to try to bring some more hogs into the area if I determine that there is a huntable population. Thanks for the input.----GOOD HUNTIN'---pruhdlr

The shoats were feeding along perpendicular to the course that I was on so it's possible that the sow had already come through when I saw the 6 shoats. I could only see through a"window" in the thick underbrush that was 20-30 ft. wide---pruhdlr

HEEELLLLLLLL YEAH, Believe it or not this is one reason that I joined the club. In Ala.it's legal to use decoys(live or dead). One of the best decoys that you got at your disposal is a wounded crow jumping around going caw, caw, caw. Also it is legal to use electronic calls. This is great cuz my FOX-PRO caller is the "cats meow". It is totally digital. NO MOVING PARTS AT ALL. We have 23 different food plots at our club and I can move between them when the crows finally figure out that "hey,a couple of our buddies went over there and they never came back, wuzzup wit dat??" Also in Ala. crow season is open all year. I have only belonged to the club for a short time and I have killed over 200 crows. The shootin' is fast and furious and you use allot of ammo but it sure is fun. I do not hunt crows or coyotes during deer and turkey seasons out of respect for the other members. I will be back at it on Feb.1 til Mar.15th. We also got some yotes that need to be "delt with".---- GOOD HUNTIN'---pruhdlr

Bamajohn, Our club is out off the Travis Rd. We lease from both Nalty and Miller.---The early season in Maine was Mar.15---Apr.30. The Johnny Stewert cassett tape caller that I had there would freeze up. I learned to blow a mouth call pretty good but with the coming of the "no moving parts" callers i bought one of them and I'm sure glad that I did. THEY WORK GREAT! I had it programed with 16 different calls for crows and coyotes. There is also allot of yotes running our club. I will be taking care of that "problem" after deer season also.------ GOOD HUNTIN'--- pruhdlr
