Hello,

I am considering purchasing a 39a and am trying to figure out what year it was manufactured. The guy who owns it is not sure.

It is in the box and has never been fired and I suspect it is only a few years old.

It has an 8 digit serial number that begins with "98" does that mean that it was manufactured in 1998?

It has a checkered stock...when did they start checkering the stocks?

Thanks,
Dean

2100 - 98 = 2002.

Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number:

1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S
1960-T
1961-U
1962-V
1963-W
1964-Y,-Z
1965-AA
1966-AB
1967-AC
1968-AD, -68
1969-69
1970-70
1971-71
1972-72

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

A neighbor has a 39-A, and says he remembers distinctly that he received it for Christmas in 1959. The serial number is T-8930. Is it possible that a 1960 gun would have been in the stores in 1959?

Think it could be. Mine starts with 26 but I bought it a year before I
moved here that was in July of 74. Squirrel hunted with it the fall before
moving here. Don't think all the Sn's match the years.

Mine is 19673, manufactured 1957. It has maybe 1000 rounds through it. Shoots a quarter 4 out of 6 at 100 yds.

I'm have a major brain malfunction with this serial number system. I have a eight digit number, begins with 21XXXXX. Which following the digit code minus 21 from 100 makes this rifle 1979. Weird?
