is the p22 a good rimfire pistol. I like the standard pistol look so i like that or one like it. And i only see a CZ kadet or a beretta 87 target chetah so p22 walther looks to be the best choice or am i missing something?

I've heard good reviews on the P22. Are you looking for a 22 training pistol? Then there is also the 22 pistols and conversion for the M1911/BHP/Beretta/Taurus pistols. Other good pistols are the Ruger MK I-IIIs and Brownings.

Which feels best in your hands? If you like the Walther 99/Smith 99 then by all means get the P22. See if you can find someone who has one or a range with rentals to testfire.

The P22 does not have a functioning muzzle break, it is just for looks.

I thought the same thing, but it was just to pretty up the barrel extension. And from what I have read they are nice plinkers but are not the most accurate gun in the world. Plus they are picky about what kind of ammo you use in them. Also if you have big hands you might find the grip a tad small, my pinky finger had nothing to wrap around when I had a chance to hold one. I suggest you go to your local gun dealer and ask to handle the guns you are intrested in to see what is comfy for you then go from there to make your decision. That is what helped me decide on my next gun.

I have a P22 in the 5 in. barrel and it,s a great gun for plinking. I bought it for my wife to learn with and she really likes it and shoots it pretty well. I shoot remington ammo in it and it shoots with no problems. I would buy it again I'm real pleased with it.

I'm assuming that this http://www.beretta.com/index.aspx?m=74&idc=2&ids=33 is the pistol your asking about?

If it is, I've just picked up one, and its great!
Dont use it with cheap or coated ammo, it's likes quality rounds, and anything but lead seems to foul the barrel!

Its a great practice pistol, I love it!

We are discussing the Wather P22, not the Beretta 87 Target you have linked.

I’ve had a Mark II for 15 years and it has been a great pistol for me. But I’m in the mood for a change and have been looking at the P22 as well. A friend has one in 3.4 and I’ve had a good time shooting it. I wasn’t as accurate with it as my Ruger, but the Ruger has twice the barrel length (6-7/8”).

The P22 does have some detractors though. Early reports were that it was prone to jamming with the wrong ammo. This was largely rectified with new mag design, denoted by an “A” suffix stamped on the mag itself. There are also reports of the safety working itself from F to S under recoil. And it is apparently tricky to reassemble without using a tubular tool (supplied with gun) to install the spring. But all in all, seems like a cool-looking, fun shooting plinker.

There’s a lot more info at rimfirecentral.com

I'm not going to argue with any of the above choices, but the very best quality handgun for the price is a used High Standard, preferly one made by the original company in Hamden Ct.

The slightly earlier "Supermatic" series has the traditional slant grip and the later model 106 and 107's have the same grip as the 1911 45 Auto.

Manufacturers today simply cannot match this quality, fit, and finish. If target shooting is your preference, look for a
Trophy, Citation, or Tournament. The Sport King is a great all around hunting and plinking pistol.

Original High Standard pistols are still commonly available so you won't have to look too hard. High Standard did have a "bitter end" producing pistols from contracted and rejected parts in the East Hartford facility. These pistols should be avoided.

As you might guess, I'm a High Standard Collector.

Between what I have and what my shooting buddies have I can tell you that for a light, compact .22 you can not go wrong with the P22. We spent an afternoon wringing it out last year after one of the guys brought one home as a grouse gun. Standard barrel model, it liked Remington Thunderbolt, Winchester Wildcat and CCI Velocitor but not Federal Lightning (stovepiped). Decent accuracy from a short barrel at 20 yards offhand to where we could consistently flip popcans. We also shot clay pidgoens from a seated rest at 70 yards and after a couple of mags found out where it was shooting so we could break 6 clays with 10 shots. (Used a scoped 10/22 to grind up the larger fragments)

Taurus makes a copy of the Beretta .22 for a little less and they aren't bad either. But for my money, I'd get the P22, the Buckmark I have, Ruger single six or Bearcat or the MkII.

One more thing, the Standard barrel P22 will fit in the back pocket of your jeans. Try that with a MkII Gov't! :D

If you want a 22 shooter with class, accuracy and something you would be proud to pass on to your heirs look no further than a S&W 617. Ask around, check it out.

I just bought a Walther P-22 and love it. I bought both barrel's for it and the laser sight from Walther. If you live in the right state where it can be owned a silencer is made for it as well. The only thing it wont shoot is Federal Lighting as they do stove pipe. It is probaly more accret than than the average shooter is and not a burden to pack as it is so light. I love to hunt small game but as I live where big things will eat you I never go hunting with a .22 rifel as I think it better to not to tempt fate. I pack a good rifel or shot gun and hunt with a .22 side arm. This Walther is a shure fire way to keep snowshoe hare in the stew pot. It gets my vote!

I thought the same thing, but it was just to pretty up the barrel extension. And from what I have read they are nice plinkers but are not the most accurate gun in the world.

The problem I have found in the 3 years I've owned the P22 is not the gun, but the sights.

The rear sights apeture is VERY wide, and the sight picture on the P22 is one of the 3 dot design. In my opinion, 3 dot sights are a combat design, not a target design. So going from my P22 to the P99, it's a home run!:D

Another concern of the P22 is the very heavy double action trigger. It is around 12-15 pounds...really. Once the gun goes S/A, the trigger is a very smooth 4-5lb.

Accurate, yes, but the owner of the P22 must get used to the sights. A friend of mine solved this issue by painting his rear sight flat black, and his front dot neon orange, now it shoots as close to his Colt woodsman match target as I've ever seen.

The front of a 5 inch P22 does not have a comp, but yet what Walther refers to as a barrel extention weight. Does it do anything but cosmetically clean up the firearm? Can't say, but my P22 has both barrels. The problem lies in that in order to change the 5" to the 3.5, the front sight is mounted on the barrel extention. When you switch to the 3.5, you have to install the front site back to the slide...... not worth the trouble in my book, so I believe I've only used that little 3.5 once or twice.

There was a reliability issue when the P22 was first introduced, but it was simply a mag feed lip problem that was addressed by Walther.

Over all, I'd recommend the gun as a fun, accurate non formal shooter.
If you plan on really drillin' bullseye, go with a Smith or other brand.

The P22 was the handgun that got me started LOVING handguns! I bought mine last spring, and have shot it close to 5 thousand times if not more... i've only shot two types of ammo out of it...CCI stingers, and Remington golden bullet....(9 dollars for a box of 500) NEVER had any problems! i hope that u decide on it, and i'd like to hear back from u on how u like it!

I myself like the Ruger 22/45 pistol. It's one fun 22. Feels like a 1911 when you hold it in your hands. I've been looking at the Walther P22 for awhile, it seems cool. But I just don't want to spend the money on a gun of that level of tactical coolness. I would like to get the Walther P99 or the S&W99 in 9mm though.

All depends on the use and how much you want to spend. The Sig Traiiside is a lovely gun. But if you really appreciate workmanship look for a S&W Model 41 target pistol. You can get a great older one for $500 to $600. Wonderful trigger, as accurate as the old Hi-Standards, and take-down is a snap. Still made so service is no problem and the mags are cheap.

I got a Buckmark camper a few weeks ago and really like mine alot. Of course there are some plastic parts on it that might need to be replaced at some point and I wish I knew of that before I bought it, but it is still a great gun.
