A bit confusing trying to generate a response to an archive note from 2001 (found in a search) but...instead of carrying nails for emergencies in the field I've gone to GP 3" screws similar to drywall screws. Most guys I know carry a Leatherman type tool which has a Phillips bit. Easier to install and retrieve if needed elsewhere.
Instead of cotton undershirt, go with a polypro long sleeve undershirt. I learned a long time ago in Boy Scouts "Cotton kills!". Overnighters are recommended to have wool or polypro in anything but warm weather. Cotton, when wet, is miserable and will suck the heat out of you in a heartbeat.
WRT space blankets i learned the hard way that a Space blanket to be used properly should be unfolded from it's original package (~1" wide x 3-4' flat) and refolded in squares. It WILL go down to it's original size, but when your hands are cold and wont function properly, it is EXTREMELY hard to unfold (particularly in low light, cold) from it's original packaging comnfiguration. ****, it's hard enough to unfold that sticky piece of mylar when warm, in daylight!
My $.02 and hope it helps someone.
