Has anyone used contact lenses to correct vision for shooting? My distance vision is good so I don't need correction for competitive shotgun shooting for which I have a variety of uncorrected lenses for shooting glasses. I do, however, have astigmatism that causes a problem in shooting rifles with iron (or fiber optic) sights. This became obvious last year while hunting with a TC Omega muzzeloder - I saw 2 front beads and 4 rear beads. I partially solved the problem by replacing the fiber-optic rear sight with an aperture sight. However this year while hunting with a Marlin 1894S which I've set up with an aperture rear sight for hunting in the rain, I noticed that when I screw out the small aperture insert so I can use the sight at low light levels, I see a double front sight. I'm considering getting a contact lense corrected only for astigmatism to use in conjunction with my uncorrected shooting glasses. Has anyone her tried such a setup?

How old are you? sounds like the same disease that has struck us all, sooner or later.

Contacts for correcting astigmatism are generally thicker and less comfortable than contacts for distance vision, in my experience. Guess it depends how much you need, would probably just have to try it.

You'll find that contact lens selection is somewhat limited for folks with astigmatism. Even if you can get astigmatism correction in the proper lens (remember that most lenses won't fit your eye properly), the astigmatism correction is normally rather coarse.

It sounds like your astigmatism is pretty bad, so you should be able to find something that fits,

I'm -8 ish in both eyes with a wee bit of astigmatism in my right eye (a wee bit too annoying when using a scope), the only lenses that fit didn't offer astigmatism that would work for me.
Good luck.

I have astigmatism in my dominant eye only; my eye doctor finally set me up with "Toric" lenses which do help some. The biggest problem I have is using open sights; without correction I see three rear sights and one front. Talk about confusing! Another possible solution is to use a peep sight; it's close enough to be a blur anyway. I've looked through one, but have yet to try shooting with one. Luckily, I have no trouble with scopes. Yet... :(

Using open sights all the time I feel for you. My advice is to go with a set of shooting glasses with a prescription in the inside of the lense of your shooting eye. My optometrist is a shooter and fixed me up with a set of shooting glasses with two focal points. One in the center and one on the inside for shooting with open sights. It was worth it and it also gives you a little more safety while hunting and shooting.

How much did that run you roughly?
