Generally speaking, smoothbore modern handguns are very illegal. I presume you're talking about a muzzleloader?

Edit: Duh... just realized that this was in the muzzleloader topic! :o What I get for looking at the new topics for the entire forum, instead of going through them individually....

As long as we're on the subject.... what the heck do you do with a smoothbore muzzleloader? Use roundballs? Shot?

I built a smoothbore pistol a few years ago; It was one of Curly Gostomsky's North Star kits. No instructions or anything, just a box of parts. Turned out pretty nice and is a companion piece for my Trade Gun in the same 20 ga. caliber. I think the new North Star Co. is producing the finished pistols and probably offers the kits. Emery

one of my hunting partners came up with the idea of hunting small game(rabbits, squirrels)with a smoothbore but in the state of wisconsin i am not sure about using shot in the pistol.

Local game law may not allow it, but there are still no federal laws against a smooth bore muzzle loading pistol. Are still some nice repro. military type large smooth bore pistols (and some smaller bored) and no reason you couldn't have one built or rebarreled if that's what tickles you. Reasonably historiclly accurate as well, were quite a few smooth bore flint single shots... were even full length "long rifles" built not as fouling pieces, but as smooth-bore-rifles.

Patterns don't seem to be all that great with the short barreled pistols (like the little derringers and coat guns), but the bigger bores do carry enough larger sized shot that they can down small game at close range (measured in feet...call it 15-20 feet).

mbegg, check out dixiegunworks.com and trackofthewolf.com for repros. I know Dixie probably has at least 2 different smooth bore pistols. One is a Harpers Ferry 1804 pistol as I recall. I'll see if I can come up with North Star's address. Heck, I might even have one or two I would let go. Emery
