View Full Version : S&W 500 ?????
I would like to know something about this revolver and it's load ! If you had to could you fire it fast double action and hit a dangerous animal ? How is the recoil and being able to hit fast enough say on a close charging bear ? JAGG

I've fired fairly quickly, but the recoil does tend to add time to
coming back on target... but a target the size of a large bear
I would imagine not too hard to hit, it's quite a bit bigger than
the paper target that was rushing towards me to attack ;) hehe
Kinda depends on the weight of the slug, my 325gr are easier
to keep on target than say my 500gr loads

Depending on the load you could shoot it fast. But is accurate fire better? This gun shoots like a tack driver if I do my part. With a medium to heavy load the revolver will kick enough that you will have to reset and fire again. Perhaps in under 2 seconds, would be considered fast and accurate for this bad boy.

I don't have much problem firing it quickly. If things got real close I would be more concerned with my laundry than with my ability to shoot it quickly and accurately.

With practice you can become fast, but you still have to contend with the recoil. ;)

You might want to consentrate on making that first shot count. IF you get a second shot at a charging bear, it will probably be from a position that you really can practice for.
Good luck!

I dont know about firing the 500 double action, but i am concerened about the longeveity, accuracy and durability in this new " x " frame. It realy is a N frame built on a larger scale with a comp and a ball indent at the frame and crane. I loosened my share of N frames up using a steady diet of 44 mag. heavy Keith loads in them. Considering the pressure curve these rounds generate i would think it may follow the same route. I guess only time and a few thousand rounds will tell.

I have 1500 rounds fired in my 500 MAG and no problems at all. Holding up very well. I shot a lot of full power loads in the 440 gr. and 575 gr. bullets. Recoil is very stiff. I think this gun will last. :D

Heck, if you don't get a second or third shot at the bear before he reaches you, you can always hit him over the head with that hefty hunk of steel. That might be enough to stun him.
I tried using a padded shooting gloove with my .500 and got an accidental double fire from a cocked first shot. Hard to imagine how the gun could cycle that quickly for 2 shots. Of course the second shot was regretfully launched somewhere into outer space. I never used a padded glove with it again.
