I have a Marlin-Glenfield Mod 20. And I also have a small rat problem. Does CCI's .22 Short CB make any noise when fired?

A lot less than a regual .22LR...less than a .22short...about like an old style Benjamin air rifle pumped up 5-6 strokes.
Be warned, will probably put holes in 1/2 wood from a miss...and through thin wood after exiting a rat (or dent the devil out of galvanized steel)...so you still have to be careful of what's behind the rat.

Thanks, the little bastards just don't die. I'll set up a trap with some food and a steel plate backstop. That should stop them.

Glock 23-C,
With any .22, particularly the CB caps, the longer the barrel, the quieter. If you have an old target gun with a 16" barrel you just can't do any quieter. Modern CB's, both CCI Shorts & Longs, and Remington Shorts, will probably make some noise, but not eough to be heard well enough to identify as a shot more than 100 feet or so away. If you can get any of the old RWS CB caps, in a rifle they virtually make no noise. In my Win. 75T the only thing you hear is the sharp snap of the striker falling!

I have 15 old CB rounds. But I don't want to shoot them because I've never seen them before. They look like a black powder precussion cap with a small .22 spitzer round. From what i've seen from CCI's website, it looks like a .22 Short or .22 LR cartridge with less powder and a lighter round. Also, I've reed that the old CB rounds were made for indoor shooting arcades. Other than CCI does anyone make a smaller round. Smoething like the old RWS CB rounds. and if not, are those rounds still easy to find.

I have used the cci "long" cb caps for more than 30 years. in a long barreled rifle they are very quiet and in my rifle have been as accurate as regular ammo. they make less noise than my sheridan air rifle. I hunted squerrils with them for years after hunting was banned where I grew up and no one ever knew but me. good luck. Jim.

I use CCI LR CBs and Winchester Long Z LRs in a Savage .22LR rifle and a S&W617 revolver. In the rifle, they're just like an air rifle report. I use them to pop off native rats from my henhouse (reluctantly) and cane toads from anywhere on the property or surrounding tracks (enthusiastically).
PMC have introduced an even quieter 20gr .22 which I haven't tried yet.

At the sort of ranges which one shoots rats, you'll make a decided dent in the surroundings if you miss. Take good note of Ribbonstone's warning!

You can also try Aquila's .22 Kolobri...bullet is propelled by primer only, and is very quiet. CCi's CBs, long or short, are no louder than a handclap from a rifle length tube.
Also try trapping your rats properly. Depending on the rodent population, buy anywhere from 6 to 12 Victor snap traps. Bait them with a combination peanut butter and millet (birdseed), also put a couple of drops of anise (licorice) flavoring on the trigger as well. Smear a bit of peanut butter on the wood under the trigger pan, too.
Trap placement is important. rats are edge runners, and will move along walls, pipes, etc. Place the traps against the wall with the triggers pointed towards the wall.
Prebait and place the traps...rats are very neophobic (afraid of new stuff in their environment. Let them get used to the traps before you set them. After a few days, when they are taking your bait, set the traps, and you should catch almost all of them.
Then go out and plink with the CB caps left over!

Once had the duty to rid a Roadway Express (Thibodaux, La.) of rats...the old place sat with it's back to a large field (perhaps 100ac.) and a large ditch. Grew some impressive rats, but you only seem to trap the early/stupid ones....they learn.
Got permission to do a night hunt...CB caps were tried, but worry about damage to freight limited the shots. Pellet guns (the higer powered versions) still required care. Did pretty well, but there were still a few hard-core fast learner types.
At the end, went to the pound and tried out a couple of terrier type dogs (can't be prue bread, but had that terrier look to them). One wass a waste of time, he got given away to an old lady neighbor...but the other one-eyed scar fase was a rat killing machine.

CCI CB caps are my favorite "around the house" load, from my old single shot Winchester they are quieter than a pellet gun. They are easy to find for me long and shorts are both 4.99 for 100 rounds. And I do believe I know you from Glock Talk, have a good one and get the little buggers(The Glock is a little loud BTW)

The CCI 22 short CB's make a crack when fired from my 16" 22 and an airgun sound when fired from my 24" barrel. Longer is definitely quiter. How long is the barrel on the rifle you want to use them with?
I have used Aguila Kolobri ammo. It has a very small bullet, maybe 20 gr, and powered by primer only. It is very quiet in a rifle with a 24" barrel. It says on the box to use in a pistol only, because the bullet could lodge in a rifle barrel. I have shot quite a few in rifles up to 27", and never had one do that. I got them for pistol shooting in my basement. It sounds like a cap gun in a pistol. I also use them to function test 22's in my garage. I just shoot them into a scrap of 2x4. They penetrate to the point where the base of the bullet is about flush with the surface. The bullet hitting the wood makes more noise than the report.
My favorite indoor rat ammo is CCI 22 bird shot, with the plastic shot capsules. It's much safer than 22 LR. It is deadly on rats, does not put holes in buildings, and it will cycle some semiautos. It's easier to hit moving targets with bird shot, too. It does have some muzzle blast, but does not crack like a 22 long rifle. Range is very limited - maybe 15 or 20 feet.
