Get out a March issue of Shooting Times and read up on S&W new toy- The .460 S&W Maguum.
It is to be the fastest , flatttest -shootin', big bore revolver cartridge ever .
The XVR 45 cal reveolver is rated at 65000 PSI and you got a deer gun to 250 yards. Recoil that of a mid 44 Mag round
Then off for the plinking rounds you could load the 454 C or the 45 colt rounds.
Well if this is indeed evey thing they say it is , I'd clear the table of all other things and wait for a rifle to match..
" The perfect bush gun"
You just ned to go to the bank for almost $1300.00

Or you can get a BFR in .450 Marlin/45-70 and not have to run pressure to 65,000 CUP.

Not a good comparison in my opinion. :rolleyes:

Why not???? Both the .460 S&W and .450/.45-70 require revolvers that weigh in excess of 70 ounces. All I'm saying is that you can equal, and possibly exceed, .460 S&W performance and not have to run such high operating pressure.

The 460 is going to be the younger 45-70.
Any way, only benefit to me is the fact I will not need to have separate projectiles (DIAMETER). All will be .452, with the added benefit of using 45 colt, and 454 casull in the same firearm. (Do not forget to clean chambers after using the shorter cases. Excessive pressure has been found the hard way)
Hmmm... I guess I will have to get both. Do a real live comparison, and post my findings in future. This will take a while... (goody goody) Now if I can just get paid to play with my toys, I would have it licked.

I agree, thats a rifle round fired from a single action. its a .458 bullet too. The .460 smith is a handgun round fired from a double action with a bullet size of .452.

the naming conventions tickle me :)
.458 = 45
.452 = 460
one might think a 460 would be a .46 when the .45 is closer to .46

The 460 is going to be the younger 45-70. Exactly what does that statement mean or imply. Certainly we aren't saying that the 460 is guaranteed for 130 years plus of service are we? Anyway. I read the article in shooting times and I find it amusing. Not to take any thing away from s/w but the way these writers write is funny. When the 500 came out the writers wrote of how manageable the recoil is and how light it is to shoot like a 44 mag. I owned one and found the recoil to be like nothing i had ever shot including a 454. It was 30 degrees outside though. in this 460 article it speaks of how the recoil is so light just like a 44 mag and it is so much lighter than the 500. Me think we have some double speak here. I'm sure we would find an advertisement or two from s/w in this magazine, but that would have nothing to do with the opinions presented I am sure.

I personally found that the 325gr (i think) bullets in the .500 were about the same recoil as a full house .44 mag from the mountian gun.

Lets see now, if I remember my english class, that would be called a Metaphor..
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=metaphor
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison.
I wonder how close the 454 can get to the ballistics of the 460 using those 200 grainers?

A 325 grain would be about the same since a 44 mag shoots a 300 grain. Taking a 440 grain at over 1600 fps, that's equivalent to a shotgun in your hand. A 44 mag shoots a 300 grain thats 1/3 less of a bullet at 1/4 less the speed yet they feel the same? Regardless, the amusing point is that when the 500 came out the magz said it feels the same as a 44. now the 460 is here and it feels the same as a 44, but it is ALSO a lot less recoil than a 500. How is this possible? All about the $$$. scout I wish I were as educated as you to be able to look at cartridges and see that they would last for 130+ years.

Ya know I do not ever recall saying that it would last 130 years. In fact, I did not say any thing about how long it will stand the test of time at all.....
Chances are, unless some one can manufacture a lever gun to handle the issues that come with this new cartridge. (Case length, and pressures) I doubt it will last as long as it could, or even should.
I also feel it would be very difficult to hang around for the 130 years to see. As you have mention, the 45-70 does have a head start too…
So maybe I should have called it the illegitimate stepchild of the 45/70 instead, my bad….

Lets have one tested now, and let the great great grand son worry about the test of time.
If you could hunt with this revolver it might just fly.
As for us poor folk to the North that could only shoot it at the range- Well it's kinda big for paper puchin.
Put it in a rifle, then show us what it will do and Why we need the round.
After all- the 3oo6 and the .22 have passed the testin time and can do anything I need to do, other than birds.

Harry is from Ontario, Canada, our friends north of the border have different rules and regs for hunting than we do in the U.S. I don't know if handgun hunting is legal in Canada or the Province of Ontario or not. Maybe Harry, Jack, or other Canadians can provide that info.

Ah, didn't realize that its illegal to hunt with a handgun up north, any way i could get some info on that??

It's illegal to take a handgun ANYWHERE in Canada with without an Authorization To Transport (ATT). In theory, the powers that be could issue you an ATT for hunting. In practise, they won't. Firearms regulations are under Federal jurisdiction, not Provincial, so this applies across Canada. We have a Liberal government with some very strange ideas on a number of matters.
Bye
Jack
Handguns ARE legal, just tightly regulated. Target shooting on an approved range is OK, packing for self defence, or wandering around the bush is not OK. Oddly enough, the thugs and drug dealers don't seem to be aware of this. Very strange.
