I was just offered a AK-47 in a trade and am not realy shure what to do. If it has not been a left hand bolt gun or a good single shot most of the time outher firearms just dont catch my attention. I have tried shooting a couple auto loaders in the past and was hit by flying brass in the face, a not to pleasent experience. Also what is the 7.62*39 round good for any way up here in Alaska. This one was made in Romania and has been tricked out. It comes with 30 round mags and that seem to me a pain in the keaster for hunting. Do they make 5 round mags for it? Are they accurate? It has a scope mount on it which comes off every time you clean it, as you take the hole top of the reciever off. With the reciever lifting off how can you keep your scope zeroed? Any info would be greatly accepted.

God Bless, Leon

Guess a few of us have played with the AK-types over the years..are reliable guns, but accuracy isn't one of their stong points. No matther how much "stuff" you clutter one up with, the basic accuracy doesn't get better...a scope can help, but as you noticed, many mounts don't seem to be all that rugged/stable.

It was made to shoot people...this it seems to do pretty well if all those nasty little wars in 3rd world countries are any indication...can be used for deer. Often compared to the .30-30, but if the game were bigger, would take the 30-30's bullet weight every time.

Have onwed them...played with them...but never really considered them as hunting rifles. Am sure you could, but they genrally fit porrly and balance about like a shovel.

The Romanian soldiers I met in Afghanistan last year had pretty nice looking Aks. They are not terribly accurate by US sporting standards though and less powerful than a 30-30. They are very reliable for automatic weapons though. To answer one of you questions, I am not sure what you can use them for in Alaska though. Certainly don't depend on one (no matter how big the magazine) to stop a bear or mama Moose charge! If I were you and I wanted a para-military type weapon, i would get something in .308 Win.
