Yeah, I know. Just go get a .44 magnum! Well, heres the story: I'm in love with this gun called the Cimarron Thunderer. Its a peacemaker copy with 3.5" bbl and smaller birdshead style grips. The gun is small and quite handy. Well I have two rifles in .44 magnum and I reload just as many .44 specials to plink with.

I was going to use the Thunderer to plink with and to carry in the woods for possible large critter attacks (Pa black bear, large hairy drunk bikers etc). I was thinking I could load a large hard lead flat nosed bullet. I have a bunch of 265 grain BTB and 300s. I realize there is alot of bullet in the case with the 300er. Has anybody ever loaded anything like this?

the 44 spl makes a great woods gun. I use 7.5 gr Unique with a Keith 250. Goes 845 fps from my S&W 696 with a 3" barrel. 15 gr of 2400 with the same bullet is popular but only goes 875 fps. Not much difference in speed but has more recoil. Have also used 6 gr Unique with the 265 gr fp from National Bullets. Worked ok but did not chrono. The 265 BTB bullet looks ideal for any 44 spl or mag pistol. Not having used it I cant recomend a load but you can find some if you look around.
