There was a problem with a run of Hornady ammo for the 454. Call Ruger and they will confirm this.

Oh by the way try a box of Winchester 300gr and see if it does the same. If it does search for a post about sticking brass. There are a few and I have posted suggestions about sending the gun back to Ruger to get that fixed. Actually Ruger tricked my all out for free.

osirus101:

There is ammo that will cause sticking, and ammo that wont, but it’s not the ammo that is the problem, it’s the gun. I’m a huge Ruger fan, but in this very forum, I’ve learned that Ruger goofed when making the 454 Super Redhawk. The SR was designed to be brute strong with the 44 mag cartridge- and it is. But when you drill bigger holes in the cylinder, and ask it to contain 50% higher pressure, it doesn’t do too well. The steel that Ruger found to contain this pressure, is springy, and the cause of the problem. The cylinder expands when the gun is fired, allowing the case to expand more. When the pressure falls, the cylinder springs back, trapping the case. You can have Ruger super-polish the cylinders, and that may help, but the fact is, that there is no cure. I don’t have the gun, or the problem, but that is what I have learned here.

thats what ive been reading...from what ive found out despite the springy metal used on this cylinder...it is quite strong...from what ive read the SRH cylider was tested with about 50% more psi then most the max loads being 65,000psi...knowing this info im less worried about full house 454 loads despite the sticking....i may however trade it in for a 500 S&W...thanks for the info
