Hey fellas;

I found an 1895G with a ported barrel for $425...Has been shot 3 times. In new shape.

Should I buy?

What are everyone's feelings on ported barrels on this gun?

Personally when I bought my Guide Gun (.444) it had ports, and thats fine with me, didn't have an unported version to compare it to at the time so the "boy that's loud " wasn't a factor . It was like new in box , and marked $299.99 , and that was even fine-er-er! with me . The question is how do you feel about the ports , because with a little bit of leg work You could very easily find a "new" as in brand new unported model for not terribly too much more than what that one ids going for , so if the ports are going to be a compromise on your part due to price, don't fret. Not sure from where you hail but Walmart has the gun listed at $419.00 as a special order( now before the EuuueeeH! Walmart folks chime in , I am mearly showing this as the closest thing to a "non regional " price) . Here in Ohio you will find them at the gun shops in the $450.00 range , still not enough to make you live with the ports if you don't wanna. I would say before you move on it check around to see what they are going for locally new , that particular one may not seem like a deal afterwards . On the other hand if your dead set on the ports and price isn't a concern then forge ahead good man!

The gun is in Michigan, I am in Illinois. It aslo comes with scope mount...I have a scope for the gun, but the mounts are already there...

I don't mind ports...just wondering what everyone's opinion and the pros and cons of ports on this particular gun are.

I think I might trade a 30/30 (I own 2) for it also to get the price down...I might be able to get it for about $200 with the trade.

Rifle25 - I've got to agree with 444fitch - I've got one and also a 22" non ported one and they're both loud! The ports do make it easier to recover for a second shot because the ports control the muzzle rise better. I paid 450.00 for mine 3 years ago so your price seems good to me! Go get it! You won't regret it! CEJ..

I bought my Guide Gun new in '98 or '99. Both the ported and non ported versions were sitting on the table at the same time. I went for the ported version and have no regrets. It's loud, it's a 45-70, have you ever heard a quiet 45-70? The only legitimate argument to be made is for barrel length. I handload and I have more power than I'll ever need. The shorter barrel is really handy in the woods. I carried it hunt and stalk all during deer season this year, got skunded but that wasn't the guns fault, and I was glad of the short barrel in heavy cover. FWIW, accuracy in my gun is superb.

gentlemen, I "bit the bullet" so to speak...

I am now the proud owner of an 1895G with a ported barrel...

the best part, I got the price down to $325 without a trade :)

Was a no-brainer for that price.

That's a "that's more like it price" for sure.

You're gonna love the guide gun! When mine was new I just had to have it in my hands every moment I could (so I could get used to it, of course ;) ). Now I go about 2 nights w/o it but still think it's the best in the cabinet.....and always goes to the bench/range with me.

Funny how that works, no matter what gun I take to the range my Guide Gun always goes along. Maybe they have strong herding instincts and it is socially correct.

Way to go Rifle25. Now with your savings you can get some nice aftermarket improvements. Let's say a Pachmyr decelerator recoil pad for starters.

CEJ1895 - How was your trip to Maine last November?

MAINER - It couldn't have been any better!! I busted a 10 point 242 pound dressed monster off of an old sno-sled trail on 11-10-2004. He was running with a doe and a 4 point when they crossed the trail behind me. I swung around, the guide gun came up, the scout scope was right on him and bang down he went! All over in 30 seconds! Then the fun began! Took us 4 hours to get him out and back to camp! Three of us couldn't lift him up high enough to get him on the back of my ATV so we just tied his head onto the back rack to protect the horns and took him out that way. We had to use the ATV's winch to get him into the back of the pickup. It must have been a good year all around since the top 10 bucks in Maine were all over 260 pounds! I'm heading up to pick up the shoulder mount next month. Man do I love hunting in Maine!! :D :D

CEJ - That's fantastic. What a buck. I hunted through all of the 3rd week, seeing only does in different places. The day before Thanksgiving & on T-Giving day it blew and rained like the devil. Friday got real cold and snowed about 1" on bare ground. Friday sunset I passed on a good opportunity at a 4 pointer. Saturday (last day of season) I followed the track of a nice 8 pointer with a super basket rack. He finally decided that he had to turn around and see just what it was that was hot on the heels of him and his doe. That was his last mistake. I was alone, and 1.4 miles from closest road - but it was worth it. Can't wait until next year. Congrats again to you. My web site www.mainetrophymoose.com should be up and running soon.

Mainer, That's fantastic! What a year it was for deer up there! It's been a long time between bucks for my hunting group but we saw more deer than we've ever seen before. We even saw a 4 point walking down the camp road at 9:30 in the morning! He must have known it was Sunday and we're not poachers :D I'll check out your website as soon as work gives me 5 seconds to breathe.. Congradulations again! CEJ...
