View Full Version : Need a scope suggestion for 22 auto.
My eyes are not 'young' anymore, so I'm considering a handgun scope for my 22/45. Never had a scoped handgun, only rifles. Would need something for field use on small varmints. Any suggestions?

Sir,
I use a holographic sight on my 22/45 and it allows these old eyes to hit shotgun shells at 25 measured yards. Try it...mine is an EO Tech..but some of the less expensive ones also work just fine in this application. Mike

I shoot an aimpoint 5000 and it is excellent. There are several attachments that go on your glasses that will help old eyes see the sights better. Merrit is the only one I've used. It is good. I shot several scopes on 22's and large bore pistols and ended up liking the red dots better. It seems to me a lot less weaving and bobbing when holding a handgun out in front of me. Good luck in your search.

I shoot a 4X on my Contender for practice to minic my Contender hunting handguns. I've also had several red dots for a Ruger Mark II and a rifle. Millet markets some very small 22 red dots for example. But I agree the red dot or holographic site is great for the 22. Keep in mind that the Red dot has doffernt sizes of dots 3,5,10 mm. Smaller is definitely better for precise shooting in this case, the 10 mm is great for shotguns but covers the target too much.
I did try a handscope (red-dot) on my 22/45. Found out two things:
1. The distance accuracy improvement is very noticable.
2. I'm not real keen on a scoped handgun.
For field carry, I'd have to purchase a special holster, and the additional weight around the waist after hours of carry, could be a problem. Bad eyes, bad back....you've heard it before. So, for now I'll stick with wearing my special shooting glasses and a lighter handgun.
