I'm getting my tax return back in a couple of days and I am alloted enough to get a marlin model 1895, now, the big question: 45-70 or 450 marlin? they both seem to be similar cartridges with the 450 being newer, is their any reason to use the 450?

I picked up my new 1895MR yesterday (450 Marlin) and can't wait to shoot it later today. This rifle has the best looking wood of any of my Marlin's. The only production rifle I don't have now is the 45/70.. to me it's a toss up between the two.

This seems to get debated every so often and again , and usually after volumes of for's and against's, usually end up being agreed upon that if you reload go .45/70 and if you don't go .450 . Their is some (albeit, high dollar) factory ammo available that will do about all you would need , if you did want .450 performance though so it could be argued that even if you didn't reload the .45/70 still makes more sense . The flexibility to still have a rifle chambered for a milder round would allow year round plinking (if you can call lobbing .45 caliber chunks of lead that) and for the hand ful of times you wanna "stomp sompthin" you could pony up some green for a box or two of the hot stuff. You would probably still be ahead of the game had you had to keep the .450 stoked with factory ammo(?) .

Just curious Ranch Dog, how bad did that 1895MR punish your wallet?

I've been wanting one really bad, and now that Marlin is only offering the 1895M, by the time I get the money stuck back for one, I won't be able to find one.

So far, the only place I've found one is Russell Sports for $739.99! Ouch!!

Thanks!!
