Greetings everybody , i just recently picked up a model7 , in the .204. I went with a model 7 because i heard they were to be a limited run. I like the model seven , but this ones kinda on the ugly side. It`s black syn , blued. But i guess my question is how much velocity do i stand to lose with the 20" barrel? I opted to go with rem 40gr accutips. The recorded velocity is at 3900fps.Maybe i should pick up the varminter , later on down the road for my shooter.
Best way to tell is to put it over a chronograph.
Each rifle and chambering is different and can have different velocities shooting the same cartridge out of a similar length barrel.
Generally, with moderate velocity loads (2400 - 2850 fps) you stand to lose approx. 25 - 30 fps for every inch of barrel less than 26". Hight velocity rounds like you're discussing, the loss can be up around 40 - 50 fps per inch less.
Again, try to put them over a chronograph to determine exactly what your particular rifle is doing.

Thanks kdub, thats interesting , why is it that a really high velocity round loses velocity quicker than a slower one. I`ll have to see about aquiring a chronograph.

An economical choice for a chronograph is the shooting chrony, I got the bottom of the line one for about $70 and it does fine for me, just make sure you take paper and a pencil to record your velocities. You can create an excel spreadsheet to figure your standard deviation, extreme spread, etc. in fact, I have one I could send you if you would like (spreadsheet, that is)

The higher the velocity the greater the drag. aka the friction constant from the air. Plus as is usualy the case with rifle rounds the lighter ones are faster and because they have less mass per frontal (sectional density) area they have a higher drag factor and slow faster then the heavy bullets of the same caliber at the same velocity.
Hope that helped,
Jim

ChuckanatorThis is the chrono I use. I bought it at Cabales for under a hundred bucks and it has performed excellent. A few weeks ago I was shooting the 44 mag over it and had a gas check separate and hit the front screen where all the buttons and the readout is. I sent it back to competition electronics and they fixed it for $30.00 and sent it right back.Good chrono and good service. Take a look at all the features it has Velocity measurement for: Rifles, Pistols, Arrows, Paintball Guns, Shotguns, Pellet Guns Nearly 2x Projectile Sensitivity Area (Compared to Similarly Priced Models)Suggested Retail....$119.95

If Chuckinator needs that font, then I hope he gets a new prescription for eyeglasses.

lol ! , i do wear glasses , but i didn`t need them to read that ! I did`t know chrono`s were so affordable and technical. Thanks for the info about the chrono. It was very helpful. I look forward to purchasing one. Thanks everyone.
