Hi

I decided to start casting for my 30-40 Handi-Rifle. It used to be a .30-30. I have plenty of information on jacketed bullets. I need some MILD loads in the 2000 +/- range for cast bullets. These will be used for shooting paper and cans. The bullet I'm using is the Lee C309-170RF cast from W/W. weight with gas check and lube is about 173 grains +/-. Can anyone here help me with some good loads? Any assistance is appreciated.

According to the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, the following loads are listed for the .30-40 Krag with 173 grain cast bullet:

Powder Start grs. F.P.S Max. grs. F.P.S

Unique 8.0 1,220 12.0 1,562

2400 18.0 1,647 23.0 1,964

IMR4227 19.0 1,633 24.0 1,923

IMR4198 23.0 1,739 27.0 1,980

Lyman Cast Man#1 shows

170gr 311291
3031 31gr 1975fps with 40gr max at 2350
that 40gr is pretty hot
An earlier one shows 29gr at 1850fps

RCBS shows 165gr
h-380 33gr max at 1831fps

I have also seen 4350 at 40gr but can't find the reference now
