Hello all! I'm sure glad I found this website!! :D
My question is, can anybody recommend a good aftermarket stock for the Savage 12FV? I'm thinking of something like a coffee laminate, with about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 wide forearm... I use Varmint Al's bipod for my rest in the field, and it works great! The price was even better. ;)
Anyway, I dearly love my Savage, but I'm not so fond of the factory plastic stock... I'd really like some wood for it. Can anybody recommend anything for it, and better still, post some pictures of their custom Savage wood?
Thanks,
Brian

The Boyd's stocks look pretty nice, but I have no personal experience with them. They're prices seem pretty reasonable as well.

Bell and Carlson can't be beat. I put one on my 10-FP-LE2 and the gun went from good to "I can't freaking believe the rifle I own"
Good Luck

Thanks for the replys!
Right now I'm between ordering a Low Profile stock from Savage, or a custom stock from Elk Ridge Laminated Stocks in Grant's Pass, Oregon.
Anyone out there have any experience with Elk Ridge Laminated Stocks???

I really like the feel of the Savage low profile stock. Do you know how much Savage wants for one?

Yeah, I called them yesterday. It's part #105653, $201.00 plus $15 shipping. A little steep, but then again, you know it's gonna fit.
There's some question as to whether or not the bolts from the original stock will work with the low profile stock... they are different part #'s apparently, but then again, all the hardware for the low profile rifle is stainless, including the trigger guard and the screws. I didn't have enough time to stay on the phone while they got someone on the phone who would know for sure... had to leave for work.
I'm really leaning toward the Elk Ridge stock for mine. I'm looking at the Dual grip thumbhole with a #1 Varminter contour forend. I'd like to make it look just like the first rifle on the "art gallery" page on the Elk Ridge website. I saw that and it was exactly what I was looking for.

Check Richards Micro-fit. I have used their stocks for years and they are nice. They have a bunch of laminated colors and styles.

Bob,
Thanks for the tip about Richard's Micro Fit Gunstocks:):). A few days ago, I ordered a Straight Line Thumbhole in Brown/Brown Laminate (on sale right now) with 45 degree Ebony tip and cap with white line spacers, 1 inch Presentation butt pad, 14 inch Length of Pull, 2 1/4" varmint forearm and a 1 inch bbl channel.
I ordered a pillar bedding kit for Savage rifles off of ebay last night to get things set in there right.
How much inletting is usually necessary with Richard's stocks? I don't have much experience with inletting, as all the muzzleloader kit's I've done have been 99.9% inletted. Also don't have any inletting tools, but I've got a lot of old files and stuff that I figure I can make tools like bottoming files and chisels, etc out of to get done whatever I need to do. I do know that success comes with going slow removing just a little bit of wood at a time, and knowing what I'm doing before I do it. And leave the Dremel put away in it's storage case ;)!
Also, this is my first laminated stock to finish... I've done a few muzzleloader kits, but this is my first smokeless project (and first pillar/glass bed project also). What type of finish do you recommend for the laminated wood?? I've used Birchwood Casey's Tru-Oil for all my other projects (walnut), and I'm happy with it... but wondering if there's something better... I remember hearing something about Defthane (sp?) or something like that?
Also, if I were to decide that I wanted the wood just a little bit darker, will the laminated wood take a stain, or would that just make a big ol' mess out of it? I figured I would just try it on a little spot inside the bbl channel or inside the action area of the stock to see what it looked like before I did anything drastic to the outside.
Thanks again Bob for the tip, and thanks to anyone else who has any info to contribute to my project!!
