Hey Guys,

I have .45 Colt revolver and never use anything lighter than a 255 grain bullet in it. Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of press about the .460 S&W…… a funky looking 200 grain 45 cal bullet at 2300 fps.

I’m wondering what kind of performance you’d get if you stoutly loaded (not max) their 200 grain bullet in a 45-70???

Thoughts??

The 460 S&W is a .452" and the 45-70 a .458". I think there would be problems. A 200 grain bullet is not going to provide much of anything in the 45-70 that the 300 grain bullet doesn't already offer.

What Jackfish said is correct.Rick Jaimeson loaded a 250 grain Barnes XFN in the .450 Marlin with a test barrel at 2555 fps in a 24 incher with 41,700 PSI he then shot the same load in a .450 Marlin Guide Gun at 2383 fps.The SAAMI for the .450 Marlin is 43,500 PSI.

The new 460 has nothing on the .450/45-70 in my opinion.

Good luck....Jayco
