hello all

can anybody please give me a source for jacketed bullets for a .50-110 in the 400 grain or up range, preferably 450 to 500 gr?

i am told that barnes has stopped making their excellent 450 gr jacketed bullet, and that hawk will not run any more custom batches of that weight bullet (at least for the time being) either because they are having trouble getting the correct copper-alloy tubing for the jacket.

midway just took my order for the barnes and put it on backorder, saying they have an order in to barnes and expect to get delivery, at which time they'll fill my backorder -- but others tell me midway is dreaming, they'll never get 'em, they're sold out nationwide. anybody know what's true re this?

any alternative bullets? jacketed, that is.

thanks

The 50-110 uses a .510" bullet, doesn't it? If so, Woodleigh makes a 440, 535, 570, and 600 grain bullet. They also make a few weights in .505" diameter. If it is a .500" bullet, I'd guess whomever is making the S&W jacketed bullets would be the folks to contact.

Would pay to get a handle on that barrel's twist rate before ordering any really heavy/long bullets....considering the cost of these slugs, it would be good to know they have a chance of working before hand.

Do believe the .500SW bulelts will be too small; most likely the 50-110 will have a .512" barrel , but tradtionally they've loaded jacketed .510" bulelts for it.

Emailed and spoke to Barnes this week regarding when (if ever) they would be running .510 450 grainers. Per an earlier conversation with them, the 50 cal Original production run kept getting set back - for nearly a year now! I was assured, and I do believe them, that the 450s will be shipped in a couple weeks.

Barnes .510 300 gr have been readily available and Midway has them on the shelf, along with Woodleigh and a nice asst. of cast - both plain base and GC. Woodleigh would be tops for reasonably priced with a tough jacket - for dangerous game you might consider Wild West's 50 Alaskan 450gr Kodiak Bear Bonded @ $75.00/20.

I'd always thought .512 was the preferred old Win standard, but apparently .510 is the "new" standard, and apparently twists run from the old 1-54" to 1-10" - definitely need to slug and check twist. The slow twist was for the 300gr Express load and I doubt it'll stabilize 435 - 525 gr, need 1-22" or even quicker for those. Again, a shame there's such a wide range in dia. - .500 (new S&W) up to .505 for Gibbs to .509 for the old Sharps and .515 cast for some of the old Wins.

Keep us advised on your progress - there are a couple people pushing 525gr cast well over 2000fps (IN NEW RIFLES!). Once weather breaks a little, I'm planning to shoot up some of my 300gr Barnes and some 435 cast - really want to try some 525gr too - we'll see how my shoulder holds up!

Good Luck, Joe (hobbyguymaine/oldwindbag)

Just to let you guys know, it looks like the 440 grain Woodleigh is built for the old 500 BPE rifles. I guess I'm kind of assuming these old rifles would be more in line with the 50-110, with similar rates of twist, at least for the original.

Alaska Bullet Works, makers of the Kodiak bullets, has both a 450gr and a 500gr. bonded core bullet.
